ucsd: Bike or Long Board?

im looking into getting a bike or a longboard. im leaning to get the long board cuz its compatible, i just need something to let me get around school thats light weight and low maintanence.

would it be better that i get a bike or a long board?

I kno a lot of students at ucsd ride on longboards, what are some good long board for a first time skater?

same problem here. dont know whether i want a bike or skateboard. im leaning more torwards the longboard since itll be compatible and sd does provide a lot of hills haha

Trying to get a longboard, but my parents are freaking out about me taking it to ucsd. They heard that story about the guy who died going down that hill. I heard a lot of people wipe out and get pretty scraped up.
Bikes: safer, but more of a hastle.
Longboards: easier to carry around, fun, cool, DANGER DANGER!!

I still want a longboard, though.

An 18 year old in our town just died after crashing on his longboard and hitting his head. Was in a coma for 2 days first. Family is devastated. I know it could happen on any kind of board/ bike, but all the kids say the longboards are harder to control and easy to crash on. This kid was a very good skater.

thats why im still debating whether or not to get a bike or a longboard. sd has some pretty sharp downhills and if u mess up, who knows how bad of an injury you’ll get. a bike is safer, but it is more of a hassle.

LOTS of steep downhills on ucsd campus. Get whatever you’re more comfortable with. I witness a wipeout almost every time I come to campus during the middle of the day.

Get a bike. I hate longboarders. They take up too much space with their zig-zagging, especially when they’re going downhill.

is there any brand and model in particular that you might recommend for begginers?

Just get any non-fixed gear road bike or something. Keep it in low gear on hills and raise it while you’re riding flats.

Get measured for a correct sized bike.

How are scooters :P

those went out of fashion sometime around 2004

I think scooters are cool! x)
But I’ll probably get a bike, it’s the most practical option. Then again…I never grew out of those heely shoes I bought when I was 13… but I’ll be a dignified college student then. My inner child is putting up a good fight. xD
Long boards are too easy to lose control on, I’d never get one.

I’d recommend a bike, but that’s just me. There’s not as many bikers here as I thought there would be. I bike everywhere, it’s just easy.

for a noobie you want to get a sector 9 longboard with little or no flex. no flex preferable.

i just need something to commute around campus. i hear that longboards are better for weaving through crowds of ppl than bikes, so im still leaning towards the longboards, but i didnt kno they would be so expensive. i thought decent longboards would be like 50bucks… sigh

um, if there’s a crowded sidewalk you’re not going to get anywhere on the longboard. unless you want to be a DB and red-rover it through the crowd, you’ll just end up picking up the board and walking through the masses until it clears up again.

but on a bike? you can take a bunch of other paths to get there – when you’re zipping along at 15 mph along gilman drive, the little detour doesn’t mean much.

^Yeah, and also with a bike, if there’s too many people in the way, you can ride in the grass and whatnot.

longboarding isnt hard to learn. you just need to carve or slide on steep hills, which is pretty easy to learn. plus, on straightaways you can just footbrake, which is an even easier skill to learn. it’s not dangerous and deadly like people think it is and its no more annoying than a bike. anyone hating on skateboarding is just too uncoordinated to skate and their approval is worthless. most people see nothing wrong with it, because most people arent losers. the “zig zagging” is just simple carving to reduce speed and the only people that get annoyed by it are the uncoordinated. sector 9 is absolute **** and riding one makes you look like a d***e. go to muirskate.com. they moved from the campus to a different location, but sell boards online. for SD, the best starter board is an earthwing superglider. it has a tail so you can lift the board up easily, but can also carve well and as you get better, it can really slide. set it up with indy 169 trucks, bones reds bearing, some risers, and soft 70 mm wheels (bigger wheels ride over things better and give you a smoother ride and 70 mm is as big as you can go with all but dropped decks) and you’re good to go. once you start sliding, just drop down to 65 mm hard wheels and you’ll be sliding all over the campus. email the guys at muirskate or check out silverfishlongboarding if you want to learn about longboarding.

also, a good longboard will cost you around $200. anything less, like a sector 9, will come with awful bearings, wheels, and trucks. sector 9 decks are also pretty bad, so in the end, youre better off starting out with a good board that doesnt have that horrible sector 9 flex. not only do long flexible decks look gay, theyre harder to maneuver and are very hard to control at high speeds. a 38" superglider or a 33" miniglider for even more maneuverability is a better option. the flex of those two boards are enough to be comfortable, but not enough to give you trouble controlling the board.

I understand that, but there have been numerous times when I’m biking uphill and some guy ends up wiping out right in front of me due to this zig zagging. If there are several people longboarding down hill, it’s extremely annoying to maneuver around them since they are ALL taking up the entire road.

And there’s always the people who randomly decide to zig zag the entire length of the walkway and I nearly hit them on my bike. Don’t be one of those people.
