UCSD Chancellor's Scholarship - a few questions

About how many admits receive this $20,000 scholarship from UC San Diego?

What's better? UCSD with only $5k out of pocket/working/loans or UCD/UCB with $10k out of pocket/working/loans for a business/econ major?

Are the perks of being a Chancellor Scholar worth it for a university 8 hours away from home and less prestigious in the major? The perks are things are like priority enrollment, research opportunities and mentoring, study abroad opportunities, and housing guarantees for four years.

Here's a description: "UC San Diego awards Chancellor's Scholarships to entering freshmen on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. Chancellor's Scholars receive an honorarium of up to $5,000 per year in each of their 4 undergraduate years (up to $20,000 total), plus special privileges"

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you find out that you were selected for the Chancellor Scholarship?

SD with that deal way before Davis, but Berkeley over SD.

UCSD has a very strong economics department and a very strong econometrics approach. The preferential enrollment, research opportunities and mentoring would probably sway me in that direction. UCB is a great school, but if you’re not getting one of their prestige scholarships, I suspect it will be much harder to get those opportunities. A good friend’s daughter went to UCB in Economics with a Regent’s Scholarship, and got the benefits you mention from UCSD. It made a difference. Scrambling with several hundred other general economics freshmen for classes won’t be the same.

Anothergalaxy…

Have you gotten your FA package yet? You’re OOS, right? Are you sure of the amounts that you’d end up paying at this point?

@Synclair: On the UCSD applicant portal, there is a link to the financial aid award offered by the financial aid office that was available the same day decisions were out, and I viewed the total grants, scholarships, loans, and self-help in my package.

@Waverly: Thanks! That helps a lot :)

@arabrab: Thanks for the advice!

@mom2collegekids: I have received the package details online. I’m actually in-state, the CC profile info isn’t accurate. Also, the aid package is an estimate, since I still have a couple FAFSA corrections to make (my mom’s just doing her taxes today). But the estimated package is still accurate enough, since the Chancellor’s Scholarship is mainly based on academics, financial need and economic background, the personal statements, extra-curricular and community activities, and first-generation college status.

I got UCSD Chancellor’s Scholarship - TMC Aerospace Engineering.

In February I had an interview for Regent Scholarship @ UCB - Mechanical Engineering.
If I don’t get Regents from UCB, I will NOT go to UCB.
It is not worthy to get better UC, and struggle later on with class registration.

UCD is lower then UCSD.

First tier: UCB, UCLA, UCSD
Second tier: UCSB, UCD, UCI
Third tier: UCSC, UCR, UCM

I am from Bay Area.
8 hours by car is only 1.20 by airplane and costs only $69 one way

@seniorsfo Thanks for the advice! I hadn’t thought of the easier alternative traveling via air. Thanks again!

So even if I visit home about 5 times a year, then I’ll still be saving thousands by attending UCSD.

Shuttle from UCSD to Airport in San Diego is free, run by students.
Every UCSD break (Thanksgiving break, Winter or Spring break) I take a shuttle to/from airport and Southwest to San Francisco.
Shuttle runs every hour and half.
My tickets cost me from $45 to $170 one way. (if you buy in advance 45-69$)
Thanksgiving is the most expensive for $170.
If you want to travel any other time, you can take regular shuttle with student discount for $16 one way.

I LOVE UCSD
