UCSD Class of 2021 Waitlist (Freshmen)

if we can only get undeclared for a capped major from waitlist, then there is no point to wait.

I got waitlisted at UCSD, and I have two questions?
My first question is does this make me more likely to get accepted into UCSB?
Secondly, since we expect to hear back around May 1st, if we SIR another college but get into UCSD are we unable to rescind the SIR in favour of going to UCSD?

@oviandhisbros:
Each UC campus admits based on their own criteria. UCSD’s decision has no bearing on UCSB’s decision.

If you are on the waitlist at any school, you need to SIR to another school by May 1. If you are accepted off the waitlist, you can then decline the enrollment at your first school and accept UCSD. You will still loose your enrollment fee from the original school however.

Does anyone have an idea of how many people were admitted from the waitlist last year?

Wondering about how they pick from the waitlist. Son has 1500 SAT, 4.3 weighted GPA, 5s on AP Calc (AB); AP Bio, APUSH, AP Euro, AP Lang, AP Government; also a National Merit finalist. Undeclared major. I thought he would be admitted.

A question, suppose you are accepted later from waitlist and the major changed to undeclared, how do you declare a specific major and at what year? is it possible to declare a capped major like CS later such as at sophomore?

@restAllgreen: If you get into UCSD as Undeclared from the waitlist and want to change to CS, do not count on it.

Here is the link explaining the process:

https://cse.ucsd.edu/undergraduate/admissions/capped-major-status

However, changing into a non-capped major is pretty simple: https://students.ucsd.edu/academics/advising/majors-minors/declare-or-change-major.html

I hope we all get in :frowning:

@Gumbymom I see, thanks. Too bad it’s doing that way, I guess my son won’t be interested to go for a different major than CS.

yeah if getting off the waitlist only gets you an undeclared seat, there is really no point unless UCSD is your dream school and you are willing to take such a big risk by giving up your major. Screw that UCSB or UCD it is.

Our D has been placed on WL. Her intended major is Neuroscience. If she clears WL, will she likely be in Neuroscience or will it be undeclared? My suspicion is that it would be latter as I understand all Bio majors are also impacted majors

@madrocks would she go to UCSD rather than UCD Regents?

@randomkid98 You honestly can’t be sure. I got in there, and at UCLA, but was surprised because of bad test scores. Honestly, I think I got in because of my essays – I got waitlisted at another good school (Case Western Reserve University) that is actually less competitive, but I only had one essay for them, and four good ones for the UCs. Don’t give up hope though on the others! It’s such a crazy numbers/story/luck(main one it feels like sometimes) and with those test scores, I’m sure you’ll get accepted somewhere good. :smiley:

@eCLearning Hey, I was recently waitlisted by UCSD and I applied for Computer Science major. Could you elaborate on your point on why the waitlist is essentially useless please? Also, if possible, would you mind telling me the source of info please. I really appreciate it!

@MisterStudentt If you applied for a capped major and get off the waitlist, you will get undeclared. Changing to a capped major is very rare and is chosen through a lottery. More info here: https://cse.ucsd.edu/undergraduate/admissions/capped-major-status

@yourguardian does that mean that the chance of me becoming a CS major @ UCSD is very low?

@MisterStudentt I wouldn’t count on it because the chances seem really low, according to the UCSD website.

@yourguardian are you referring to the chance of me getting off waitlist, or the chance of switching into CS major from undeclared? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question…

@MisterStudentt undeclared to CS

@lkg4answers Our daughter had her heart set on SD for a long time, so it was a major disappointment. But Davis also has a great program and yes, she has regents, but she wants a more urban setting.
