Debating wether or not my D should attend Triton day since she has been waitlisted. Might be just more of a heartbeak, but in the slim case she is admitted it would be nice to know more since we would only have 3 days to Send SIR
@longwait2 Triton day is only for admitted students
@yourguardian @longwait2 they’re not going to block waitlisted potentials from entering. that’s a decision that you and your daughter should make together. it might make the decision easier down the road or the heartbreak last a little longer. (personally, I’d go just because it’s a fun day)
Do you guys think that it’s a good sign that they aren’t accepting essays or senior grades? I was thinking that they were expecting a lot of empty spots in their freshmen class, so they won’t be able to afford to be as particular in past years. I hope it’s based off of major…I’m visual arts and a lot of people don’t really see it as an art school.
Find it strange that there are no stats available for last year: how many wait/listed, how many opted-in, how many were admitted?
Did you guys email your admission officers or anything?
Called admission office today. Person I talked to did not have info on wait list stats for 2016. I asked how candidates are chosen off the wait list. He basically said there is no ranking. They do a all new review when they know how many spots are available. He also mentioned that they received a record number of application this year, so not too expect a miracle.
For anyone who’s still sticking around, some stuff I learned last Sat:
I went to Triton Day as a waitlisted applicant (everyone was very friendly and I still got a free sling pack, lol) and asked the Undergraduate Advisor of the major I’m looking at about getting off the waitlist. She said it’s very slim and didn’t seem too reassuring about that-- what with the stats of 2015 that’s understandable. Yet all of my admitted friends have said they’re committing elsewhere, so there’s still hope!
On housing issues, HDH told me that you still get guaranteed housing even though all waitlist applicants get their notice AFTER the May 1st deadline as long as you let UCSD know (SIR, housing form) within three days of their emailing you. I believe this housing info is in the waitlist FAQ on the UCSD website, if you want something more credible than “somebody told me.”
I also have a question: if I signed up for a major that I no longer wish to pursue, is there any way of relaying that to the admissions officers/staff/regional counselor? I signed up for a highly capped major, computer science, and I’d be let in undeclared if I get off the waitlist, but is my continued record stating compsci as my top choice bogging down my chances?
Cheers, and good luck to those of you waiting.
So, this is coming from someone who lives in SD, has been to UCSD waaaaay too many times, who’s parents both work at UCSD, one as an assistant professor and the other as a research scientist, and has personally talked to multiple admin officers: waitlist is completely random; if you got a request for essay, do it, if not, don’t worry.
Just know that there is a chance to get off the waitlist and get into a capped major.
My friends brother who got waitlisted to UCSD and UCD for biology got in for his major just last year with a 4.2 gpa and 32 ACT.
My kid just took action to turn down UCSD’s offer of admission. He did this as soon as he made up his mind as a courtesy to UCSD and to those waiting. Good luck guys. Our kid decided to take a gap year instead and will attend another college after that.
can anyone answer a quick question? if admitted to CS major, does the student still have to declare CS major after 1 year (via lottery after meet certain GPA criteria)? or only those who are undeclared major or other major and want to transfer to CS major have to meet certain criteria and declare the CS major?
BUMP! DID ANYONE GET ACCEPTED OFF THE WAITLIST YET?
I am still desperately waiting for my miracle…
Me too… I thought hey weren’t out till May 1 though.
GUYS, on April 4th I received a text message from the UCSD triton alert notification system, well this text message is supposed to send to students from UCSD(admitted or currently enrolled?) I wonder if it meant something about me getting off waitlist, I’m desperate about getting into UCSD, it is my top school, the whole waiting for result thing is killing me.
@valester It will be interesting to see UCSD’s admitted vs enrolled stats this year. We know MANY admitted students who have decided against UCSD based on its stereotype and reputation.
@lkg4answers What stereotype and reputation? New ones? If not why applied at first place? UCSD’s yield is never high. They always admit the same kids that UCB/LA also do, and then some so…
@Just4Years I apologize if I offended anyone. I’m referring to the “cut-throat” and “socially dead” reputation. Read some of the other UC threads and the pros and cons that prospective students list about UCSD. It is no doubt a great school but there seem to be a lot of prospective students with concerns.
People apply to many schools because acceptances and rejections are difficult to predict. There are people that got into UCSD but rejected from Irvine and SLO. It is better to be safe than sorry.
@lkg4answers Oh non taken. I was just curious on what’s new from ‘this year’ you were referring to. It’s the same old stereotype then. Doubt any will change from previous years based on the old news.
Has anyone heard anything? I know it is really early, but still! Mine still says waitlisted.
