Transferring from a community college which charges around $26 per unit... Looking at the costs, I am assuming UCSD doesn't work like this except for the Summer which charged like ~$200-$300 per unit.

What makes you a full-time student or a part-time student? (How many units?)

Assuming I meet the requirements of a full time student, they'll charge me the same amount regardless of how many classes I take?
(Wondering If I'm allowed to take some interesting/fun classes like music in addition to my major classes as an engineer without paying extra.)

To be considered full time you have to be taking 12 or more units per quarter. The fee is not unit based so you can take as many more units as you want for the same cost (there is however a limit of 24 units per quarter or something around there and I think you’ll have to petition to take more than that).

The FT requirement is for the YEAR–not quarter-by-quarter. You need 36 in the span of an entire academic year, meaning this includes both Summer Sessions counting for the preceding year.

You can take up to 22 units without college petition; anything above 22, you have to ask your college’s academic advising and petition your schedule formally and take it to the registrar. You will likely be denied the petition unless you have had success in taking 20-22 units in a quarter in the past. Personally, I’ve taken 30 units in a quarter, but have a friend who took a total of 10 Physics undergrad+grad courses in one quarter and he still managed a 4.0. Some of you may or may not know that student, but he’s pretty famous.
