UCSD summer session question

Hi! My son was admitted to UCSD as a transfer from community college effective this fall. We are thrilled! We were wondering if he should get a head start by taking one or two summer school classes there. We are unsure about the school’s policy on what constitutes a full-time student. He really doesn’t want to take more than 3 classes (12 units) in the fall and the winter. Looking at school policies, one source says he must complete a minimum of 36 units per academic year, ending in the spring quarter. Other sources state that he must complete no less than 36 units in 3 consecutive quarters. Does that include the summer? If he takes 2 summer school classes (8 units) and 3 fall quarter classes (12 units), does he have to take 4 winter quarter classes? This is really confusing! Thanks to anyone who can help us.

I think they mean by the end of spring quarter. 12 units per quarter, fall-winter-spring. That makes the most sense to me. Also, I haven’t SIR’d yet, but are transfer students allowed to take summer classes? I hear they fill up quick at SD.

@Valerie560 The 36 unit requirement is because a full-time student needs to take 12 units per regular quarter. This does not include summer.

@Overhang Yes, transfer students can take summer classes, but I think many will have already filled up.

Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it!
