Saw a good number of people who got admitted as undeclared instead of their intended majors so I thought I’d make a thread so we could help each other figure things out!
i applied as a computer science major but got in as undeclared so now I’m totally lost on whether I should take the opportunity or not. anyone know someone who’s gotten in as undeclared and decided to go anyway?
Same here, got in Undeclared with a 3.75 GPA. I applied for computer science too. The thing is I got waitlisted from my number 1 choice (Davis) and im nervous. My community college doesn’t offer many of the prereqs so I feel like i might not be admitted. Im just as confused as you are man
I got in as undeclared in Computer Science as well, gpa is 3.74, I’ve been doing some research and seems like you practically need a 4.0 after taking at least 8 units of computer science classes there to get in, and it isn’t really guaranteed as they are limited with spots. Really only up to you if it’s worth the risk.
I got in as undeclared for comp sci also. Only got into UC Irvine for Comp Sci & Engineering but rejected everywhere else. Not sure what to do yet.
Hi guys! CS/CSE is actually impacted at UCSD, heres a link that might be helpful in the process on applying into CS/CSE: http://cse.ucsd.edu/ImpactedMajor my s/o is actually a recent UCSD CS/CSE graduate so if you guys have any questions that he may be able to answer lmk!
Undeclared for CS as well, 3.6+ GPA. Got into Irvine for Math (CS was my main major) and I TAGed to Davis for CS.
Got in as undeclared, applied as CS as well. GPA 3.87. I am missing quite a bit of stuff (all 3 physics, linear algebra, CSE 30), so I am surprised I got in at all. My situation is sort of unique, as I already work as a junior developer full time. If not for my job, I would probably go to UCI, which accepted me for CS. I still haven’t decided what I am gonna do yet, but the plan is either to do undeclared for a year or so, then apply for CS, or switch to something less impacted (like Math-CS). I am also considering part time study (10 units or less) - the company I work for pays 5K/year for school with no cap, so I can milk it as long as I need to, since graduating in 2 years isn’t my goal.
Where does it say undeclared for you guys? Is it where it says “your major:”?
I’ve mostly lurked on these forums but I’ll break my silence now because of this situation.
For ucsd you can get into the school but not your major. Chances are this happened because of missing major pre reqs or low grades. This leaves you as undeclared. When you first enter ucsd you will declare a different non impacted major. For you to get into the major you wanted, you’ll apply to it after taking a couple screening courses. For me it was going to be 3 classes and they said even I had a 4.0 between those 3 classes I wouldn’t be guaranteed a spot.
Last year I was accepted as undeclared because I missed linear, diff, and c++. I originally applied as EE. After they told me at transfer triton day what the undeclared situation was I decided I’d just wait another year and finish up those 3 missing classes.
Personally, I think I made the better choice. I took classes in fall and had nothing to do all spring (it’s been really boring). But with all my pre reqs finished I just got into ucsd again this year (as an EE major) and even UCLA.
Sorry I’m just really annoyed by UCSD’s system. Last year I got so excited getting in and then got crushed when I learned what the caveat was.
@Raftar94 yeah man i totally feel you ucsd was my top choice but this happened and it sucks. i don’t have an option of staying an extra year since i’m at a csu… i checked the cse impacted page and i’ve finished all the pre reqs with a 3.81 so i’m not really sure what’s going on here. i’ll try to call and talk to someone about it and post an update about the situation on monday
@rollcake Please tell me how it goes. As an intercampus transfer and a student already majoring in CS in UCR, I have already taken and done extremely well on numerous CS classes, both upper and lower division. It really does not make any sense to get accepted as undeclared…
Anyone planning to switch to CS at ucsd?
I’m in the same situation, i was admitted in my alternative major(econ + math), my first major is structural engineering, Does anyone know how difficult is to change to structural engineering?
I found on the UCSD website that “The Structural Engineering Department will admit 10 continuing students into the capped Structural Engineering major each year.”
Here is the website
https://structures.ucsd.edu/node/2140
Major: Chemical Engineering
GPA: 3.54
Accepted: UCSD (Undeclared), UCI
Rejected: UCSB, UCD
Waiting: UCB
Will choose Berkeley hands down if I am admitted, as small a chance as that is. Obviously declining UCSD, I’m not going anywhere without a guaranteed major. I was reading into it too and you only get one shot at declaring ChemE or NanoE, and that’s after basically a year of classes. After that you’re basically screwed. I can’t imagine the stress.
It just doesn’t seem worth it to do that unless it’s the only place you got accepted. There is a very high probability of it being a HUGE waste of time and money. And for what really? All the UC schools (aside from maybe merced and santa cruz) are top tier universities. They are considered to be on par with Ivy league schools lol.
I say play it safe and go where you’re guaranteed. I hardly believe and employer is going to look at your resume and think “mmmmmm i see you went to UC Riverside. I prefer UC Davis graduates, a faaaaar superior university mmmmm.” lol. We’re talking top schools in the nation here lol. Anything with UC in front of it is gold. Berkeley though… that’s a slightly different story maybe lol. We’ll say that’s platinum lol. As far as reputations go anyway.
UCSD and UCLA were my top choices, I got rejected from UCLA, but accepted at UCSD. Just like you guys on here I got in as undeclared. I already e-mailed UCSD asking if there is a chance to ever to switch into engineering. I will let you guys know what they say.
I was looking at the schedules on triton day and theres a event called undeclared:Engineering. I’m going to check it out and report back if they say anything that could benefit us.
@poppab5 i’ll be at transfer triton day too! i’ll be calling ucsd tomorrow and i’ll post if i get any new info on the situation.
@rollcake Sweet! Let us know
@rollcake I’ll be there too! Also have a speaker from UCSD admissions coming in to my CC (here in the San Diego area already) in a few days so I’ll keep everyone updated if I get anything new. It’s going to be tough getting into the major we want regardless but it can’t hurt to be more sure about what we’d be getting into.
