Im A Biology Major And Live In South Bay California (los Angeles). Which School Is Better Overall?

biology => UCSD

UCLA by FARRR.

Can You Guys Tell Me Reasons Why

My biology teacher said SD had a very strong biology department and a great medical school. Plus, San Diego is like biochemical version of silicon valley. It's convenient to find internship in there. That's what I heard.

UCLA is a great medical school, even better than UCSD in many academic aspects and in many majors.

''UCLA is a great medical school, even better than UCSD in many academic aspects and in many majors.''

I found out I hate ucla as hell recently lol

"Why UCLA?? Because it's UCLA!" I'm so sick of this.

"San Diego is like biochemical version of silicon valley"

That is right on the money.

For bio sciences, San Diego is better, no question. Last I remember, it was ranked #3 in the nation.

In June 2004 San Diego was ranked the No. 1 biotech cluster in the U.S. by the Milken Institute. The honor was bestowed for the regions climate of innovation and success in bringing products to market, establishing new companies, and creating jobs. Recently, Biosite Inc.s Triage® Cardio ProfilER and Biogen IDECs Zevalin have joined Agouron (now Pfizer) Pharmaceuticals' Viracept®, Ligand Pharmaceuticals' Targretin®, and Biogen IDECs Rituxan® as successful products developed in San Diego. Corporate giants Merck, Pfizer, Dow, Novartis and others have developed key partnerships with local biotech pioneers, fostering growth while providing companies with the financial freedom to develop innovative new products.

Much of the credit for San Diego's revitalized economy goes to the University of California, San Diego, which is world-class in its academic quality and home to many Nobel Prize winners and members of the National Academy of Sciences. UCSD shares its Torrey Pines location with the world renowned Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Salk Institute, the Scripps Research Institute, and the Burnham Research Institute.

Together with UCSD's Medical Center, these outstanding reseach institutions have created a critical mass of technological innovation, providing the seedbed for start-up companies in biotech, software development, wireless communications, pharmaceutical development and medical equipment manufacturing.

San Diego's biotechnology community is the third largest in the country. San Diego's communications industry is one of the fastest growing in the country and has earned San Diego the title of wireless communications capital of the world.

The economy of San Diego is also influenced by its port, which includes the only major shipbuilding yard on West Coast, as well as the naval base.

exactly!!!!!!

If your planning on doing graduate studies in bio, SD has some of the finest faculty available. Famous for it's bio department (which is state of the art, it's very awe inspiring).

If you plan on going to med to school to become a doctor, you might want to go to UCLA. It's better known to the general public and living in LA could be a benefit.

i think bio the ucsd bio program is very highly regarded, but at the same time, there's the non-academic aspects you might want to consider. i heard its very, very difficult to meet new people there and very little to no school spirit (having no football or basketball teams) does that i think.

Go UCSD for bio. School spirit and the whole college small-scale nationalism is just a big distraction IMO. "My school is the best!" "No MINE is!" That's real petty for the supposed brightest students in the nation, don't you think? :)
