I'm deliberating between UCSB, UCSD, and University of Oregon. UCSD seems like the perfect school, except that everything I have read, literally everything, tells me that the UCSD social scene is god awful, including few lame parties and average looking women. Can you give me more information on the party scene? Is this true? Also, what do you think about the education at UCSB, because it's only ranked 5 spots behind UCSD at 42 best national universities. Is it worth getting a degree at UCSB?

If you are obsessed with partying UCSD honestly isn’t a party school. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find parties. Make friends with the international students if you want to go to wild parties. Also, I strongly recommend you join a frat. I know some frat guys who seem to be partying constantly! Also, my neighbors at Muir seem to host their own private parties several times a week. I personally think SD girls look like girls at any college campus. However, you should look around and judge for yourself.

I have heard that UCSB offers a pretty good education. My friends who go there seem to party a lot! However, the problem is since it has that reputation, even though it’s a good school some employers might not be able to look past its “party school” status. Then again, what do I know? You’re better off asking a UCSB grad.

I agree with the above poster about the reputation, I’m sure tons of UCSB grads go on and do great things but I didn’t want that on my resume. Also, do you want to live in a big city or a small city? I picked UCSD over UCSB simply because I wanted there to be more opportunity for internships, more places to go, things to do, etc. I just like big cities and Santa Barbara/Isla Vista felt small and in the middle of nowhere. That’s just me though, and that’s why it’s important to visit campuses.

If you want to party at UCSD, definitely go greek. At UCSB you don’t HAVE to because everyone parties, but I would say at UCSD it’s more difficult to party frequently if you are not in a fraternity/sorority.

If you’re not in a fraternity/sorority, are you not allowed to go to fraternity/sorority parties?

Sorry if it is a dumb question, I am not very familiar with the greek system

Sometimes the frats will have “open” parties which is usually only during rush week. The rest are private (or only open to women).

Is it possible to rush at the same time as doing freshman engineering?

I rushed a sorority while doing transfer bioengineering. (so yes lol)
