I'm an incoming freshmen at UCSD and I move in this week. After reading all these reviews about how no one parties or has fun at UCSD I'm seriously considering getting through this year and transferring out of there as fast as I can. I'm no party animal but I do like to loosen up after a long week of studying and I'm concerned about being one of the only ones who does that. Everyone talks about how UCSD is a fallback school for the kids who didn't get in to Cal or UCLA, but I got into both of those schools and chose SD for their marine biology program. Did I make a mistake?

UCSD’s social scene is a big complaint amongst my DD’s friends. Her friends have visited my dd at Davis and note a huge difference in the quantity of social activities on both campuses.

They note how difficult it is to get around the SD campus in a timely manner because of its geography and the manner in which the housing is set up:
You don’t have a "“frat row” or a college township or anything that makes it easy to access social functions.

It’s not like UCLA’s Bruin Walk where you see and read about all of the activities, or like Davis’s 40,000 bikes, Greek row and and multiple restaurants. It’s definitely nothing like UCSB’s party scene.

It doesn’t help that you have an uber competitive school population, who go to school and go “home” to study. and that people go across town to go to some parties at SDSU.

Give it a shot, and see what you think this year.

My BFF’s daughter is a 3rd year at UCSD. She is very sociable and has had no problems making friends and attending parties, but she does agree that the school can be “socially dead” at times. She is getting a great education but if she did all over again, she would pick a school with a Football team. Schools such as UCD (which can be considered dull also)/UCLA/UCB etc… all have a Football teams which helps promote more school spirit.

Not to my daughter, she seems to shrug when I mentioned to her that kids on CC think her school is social dead.
She’s been through all top 3 UC campus and still like this location.
There are sororities if you want to join. There are parties if you know where to look.
She even admit she doesn’t like football. And her sister who went to the real party school, USC, finally admitted this is much better choice.

If you chose the school for it’s academic program, you didn’t make a mistake. I live in La Jolla, about 1 mile from the campus. What you’ve heard about the school is true. However, don’t forget you will be in the city of San Diego. There is PLENTY to do in the city after a long week of studying, and you don’t have to go all the way over to SDSU to find it.

“If you chose the school for it’s academic program。”

“it’s" academic program: I guess you didn’t choose your school for its academic program.

Oh my … I have to chuckle. The more things change the more they stay the same. I graduated from UCSD in 1981 and “dead socially” was the reputation then. I made plenty of friends and had a really active social life. It is known as a serious school. Here is an old joke: The professor walk into a class at Cal and says, “good morning class.” The class responds, “no test, no test!” A professor walks into a class at UCLA and says, " good morning class." The class responds, “good morning, professor so and so.” A professor walks into a class at UCSD and says, “good morning class” … and everybody writes it down! Trust me - La Jolla is a great place to live and we didn’t automatically write it down!

My son is very outgoing and social and loves UCSD. He doesn’t seem to have any problem finding things to do. There is always something going on campus, and surfing is a 15 minute walk away, He has a car but doesn’t use it much. He says the campus is easy to get around- he uses a long board. He has been to a lot of concerts on and off campus, Chargers, and Padres games. He is a student athlete which helps him meet people. He chose UCSD over the other UC’s and couldn’t be happier.

It’s dead alright. You have to hit Rock Bottom, go through a bend before you get to UCSD.
