Didn’t want to hijack the other guy’s thread but wanted to ask some questions of my own on this issue.
I’ll be attending UCSD marshall this fall, but wanted to transfer to UCLA in the following year. Of course i’ll probably have to do this as a junior level transfer, so i’d have to “cram” in some units in one year. The major i’m transferring into only has Linear alg, 2 years of calc, and stats as a prereq and I believe I finished the latter 2 with AP credit(?)
I’ll have AP credits for Calc AB,BC, Chem, and stats (meager, i know). I plan on going to a CC and taking 3 courses this summer which, if the units are simply additive, will put me spot on/bit under sophomore standing. After that, i’ll try to take 4 GE classes per quarter (that’s normal, right?) which should barely put me at 90 or so quarter units by the end of spring quarter.
Am I crazy for trying this? Is the logic right here? I read that taking 4 classes is normal per quarter and i’ll be taking mostly GE’s, so it shouldn’t be too bad. Do i look worse for trying to cram in everything compared to someone who is staggering it out over 2 years? Are there more than just grades when they review a transfer application? (EC’s ,etc)
Thanks in advance and apologies for the grammar.
GPA and finishing your pre-reqs are the most important for UCLA. https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof.htm
@81Mamba Sweet! So EC’s shouldn’t be that much of a deal at all? Are they even considered?
ECs depend on major, for very competitive majors, ECs can make a difference.
Why the rush?
I will say with one Year transfers, the ones I’ve seen who have made it don’t have ECs and got in. And these were selective STEM majors. If you only have to take 4 gen ed courses for three terms, it is doable, I suppose.
Why not stay at CC one more year and reapply again to UCLA? You have much better chance of getting good grade there.
@luckie1367 My major doesn’t seem to competitive. It’s STEM, but it’s not engineering or CS. The transfer acceptance rate is roughly 70%.
I’m kind of at that point where i’m missing units to transfer, but not enough to warrant another year at UCSD. I’m only missing a couple, so I don’t mind pushing myself a bit more. Besides, 4 classes per quarter isn’t too bad, right?
@lindyk8 Whoa, nice! I’m definitely still going to work towards some EC’s, but probably won’t focus on them. I’ll be taking 4 gen ed classes, yes. However, I haven’t talked to any advisor about this, so i’m not 100% if this can be done.
@DrGoogle I’m actually an incoming freshman to UCSD straight out of high school. CC is really a great option, but due to personal reasons, I cannot attend CC as a full-time student.
Thanks all for your responses! Also, if you have any experiences and/or tips you want to share, i’m all ears! :- )
Okay, I’m a bit confused. What year are you? Are you starting college this fall?
Oh I thought you wrote you want to transfer junior level so that’s what I thought. I think you can transfer after one year. I talked to someone and she said her daughter was successful in transferring from UCSD to UCLA after the first year.
The stem majors have a lot of prerequisites to fill that may take you longer than a year. For instance, the math majors recommend 2 years of calculus through vector calc, as well as linear algebra and diffy q’s. I’d say stick it out and give it two years. You’ll have more time to beef up your application and who knows, you may end up enjoying UCSD
@transfer420x I don’t mind doing a breakdown like the other thread if you post your current major and your intended major at UCLA. That said, having AB and BC (Assuming a score of 5 on AB and at least a 4 on BC) is a huge help. Marshall also isn’t heavy on their breadth requirements so as long as you can get the classes to finish the Dimensions of Culture requirements (which tend to fill up fast from what I’m told), and depending on your major, I can realistically see a one year transfer.
@luckie1367 So sorry! I wrote the post in a hush and knew it would be a bit confusing. : /
I’m a graduating high school senior atm who’s set to attend UCSD in the fall.
@DrGoogle Oops! Sorry, haha. That’s relieving to hear. I’ll grind at it and hopefully do well. Do you happen to know what major or anything specific about her?
@fncrane Really? I looked into the major i’m applying to at UCLA and the prereqs aren’t too bad. I’ll have to do some more research and get confirmation though. I may rough it out, depending on how I feel during the year. I wouldn’t mind taking a semester off or something if I do decide on it, haha.
@ActuaryorBust Sure! I’ll pm you due to personal reasons. I hope you don’t mind.
Thanks again all for your responses! :- )
Post #11, I think she was bio or premed, not engineering or CS.
Oh okay, being a HS senior makes a slight difference.
I think you have two options here:
- Go to CC, and transfer in 1 to 2 years.
- Go to UCSD and transfer in 2 years.
fncrane is right, STEM major generally have a ton of pre reqs, and I’m not sure they can be done in one year at a UC.
OP seems to be speaking about the statistics major, who’s prereqs can be done in a year with his AP work. I could be wrong though.
@naregian Darn… you got me! Yes it is the statistics major pre-reqs, which, if my AP stuff is accepted, should be almost completed.
@transfer420x Yeah, no worries. That’s my major too so that’s how I sniffed it out. I’m also doing everything in a year as well. Calc 2 starts this summer then Calc 3, LA, DifEq and Stats next semester.
All uc schools have following criteria.
- Cc students who finished prerequisite.
2.cc students with couple classed incomplete.
- Other UC campus.
By attending UCSD, you are becoming 3rd priority.
What is the major?
Post #17, from what I’ve read UCLA treats CC students and other UC students the same. It’s the only UC that does.
