Hi all, I recently got accepted into the Earl Warren college at UC San Diego as a transfer student. Regarding housing, do I stay at The Village or can I also apply for the Warren apartments as well? What are the pros and cons for either option? Also if I stay at The Village, am I still a part of the Earl Warren community? Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know much about transfer housing, but I’m assuming you can apply to both. Hopefully somebody else will have a definite answer. I’m pretty sure you can also email the housing services at UCSD about it.

I’ve never been to the Warren apartments before, but I’ve heard it’s nice. I’ve been in one of the Village apartments once and it looked really spacious!..then again, I’m a freshman living in a residence hall. The rooms do seem a bit bigger though, but I’m not sure how it’s like relative to other apartments.

The Village is right next to The Market, which is the biggest and probably the best market on campus. You can buy a lot of things there. It IS an on-campus market though, so if you want you might be better off going off-campus to Ralph’s. It’s very convenient though. The Village is pretty far from the rest of the campus (I’m pretty sure it’s even farther than ERC, which is itself already pretty far), so it might be a bit troublesome to get to classes. If you live in The Village and have lots of classes around Muir/Marshall/Warren, it’d probably be a good idea to spend your time between classes at the Geisel Library.

The Warren apartments are also kind of far, I believe, but I’m pretty sure it’s at least closer to Warren Lecture Hall, where you’ll probably have classes (again, I think) than The Village is to any building with classes. I’m not sure how close the apartments are to the dining hall or the market. The market at Warren is an okay size, and if the weather is nice there’s an area outside where you can sit.

This is pretty much all I know. I hope it’s helpful!

Oh, one more thing! If you stay at The Village, I’m pretty sure it’d be harder to really BE in the Warren community (I think that’s been a big problem with transfers, and I…think there’s something being done about that?), but you can definitely still be in it! There are usually events for transfer students and events for Warren in general that you can go to. Plus, you can still identify yourself as Warren and show Warren pride whenever and stuff like that. Kind of like…one of the main questions people ask each other here when they meet each other is, “Which college are you from?” If you happen to meet someone else from Warren, great! Where you live doesn’t really matter in that case.

Thank you so much for replying! I’ve looked at the campus map and the Village is pretty far from the central campus, hopefully they’ll have shuttles to campus, but I’ll look into it later. I understand the purpose of having the six college students, mainly for incoming freshmen, since a smaller community makes it easier for people to get to know each other, but it seems like that excludes transfers who are admitted into one of the colleges but don’t live with the other students in the college. I’ve heard the Sun God event brings the whole university together though, so that would be interesting. I’m still waiting to hear back from 3 other UC’s, but I’m pretty excited about San Diego. Again, thank you for replying!

No problem! UCSD does have shuttles, and I’m pretty sure there’s also an app that lets you check the shuttle schedules. Walking might be faster than waiting for the shuttles though. I haven’t experienced Sun God yet, but from what I’ve heard, that’s one of times during the school year when everybody gets together and has a lot of fun and everything’s exciting.

From what I understand, transfer students are not allowed to live in the general undergrad apartments/dorms on campus other than at The Village. They do have buses that go around campus and while the Village it far it is really nice. As for getting to know other people in your college, it’s really what you make of it. Personally, I think the community you build with other transfers will be equally rewarding and fun. When I was visiting my boyfriend at UCSD I went by The Village and there were students walking around so at least I know it’s not dead or anything haha.

I got accepted to the Sixth for Polisci and is what mistybeach says is true I am in for a world of annoyances aren’t I? Anyone else care to chime in? I really hope I dont have a long shuttle ride across campus for classes every day…

Maybe take a bike? I have seen students ride bikes, scooters, and skateboards across UCSD and then you avoid waiting for the shuttle. However, UCSD is a beautiful campus so I don’t mind walking whenever I visit (but I assume that may get old after a while).
