UCSD vs. Boston University

Hi! I need help deciding between these two colleges. I'm pre-med and I know I want to go to medical school after getting my undergraduate degree so I want to go to the one that will prepare me more for grad school. Another factor is financial aid. I would have to pay 19K for Boston U and 9.4K for UCSD.

How would you weigh the academics between them? What about life there? Overall experience?

you’re expecting that someone here has done their undergrad at both places?

Visit both campuses and decide if Boston U is worth $40,000 more than UCSD.

I’m looking for insight on both colleges or if you know someone who knows to both? Anything would be helpful.

That’s the assumption of many of the questions asked on this website. It’s amazing how some people are experts on so many different universities.

I know nothing about Boston U. I’ve done my research on UCSD and will more likely be attending this fall. UCSD is highly established research facility and was built from the bottom up for that purpose. It is well respected and has many science classes. Many of the alumni have become well established scientists that have contributed to the medical community. It’s 6 college system is inspired by famous UK university’s such as oxford and Cambridge. It is definitely a school you can’t go wrong with when you are chasing your academic goals. For a biological science major attempting pre-med the classes available can be a dream come true.

Life on campus as far as I know, if you want to meet people then you have to fork out the effort. The campus by many students is considered very beautiful and very close to the beach. Nice all-round-weather. I can’t see anything wrong with going to UCSD for what you are trying to do. Since you stated that it is cheaper to go to UCSD then do that. The years ahead of you can cost much more. Save, try pre-med, im going for pre-med as well, a lot of students don’t make it. I know this and if I was in your position I would try to save as much as possible for the “in case” scenario.

I am currently an undergrad at UCSD that was accepted into both UCSD and Boston University. For BU, I got into the honors program of their management school, but ultimately chose UCSD for pre-med. Money was not really an issue since I’m from out of state and I’d actually be paying less for BU than for UCSD. I’ve visited BU numerous times and many of my friends go there, but it just can’t compete with UCSD if pre-med is the track you want to go.

UCSD is a very specialized college designed around the sciences. As such you will have many opportunities to do research at UCSD or one of the numerous research facilities (like the Salk Institute) around the campus.

It’s almost been a year since I turned down BU and its honors program for UCSD and I haven’t regretted it one bit.
