UCSD waitlist?

Does he like his classes? So far, at my CC, my computer science classes are fairly easy for me (I have A’s in all but one – so that is a 3.8 in my computer science courses). It is the physics and math courses needed for the major that are bringing my GPA down. I know the classes will be much harder at a UC though.

I feel like he hates the classes :frowning: because he is always complaining about it and stuff… and he barely sleeps too

“I feel like he hates the classes because he is always complaining about it and stuff… and he barely sleeps too”

Eek…well…that makes UCSD look less attractive to me. Is your boyfriend a transfer student or did he get in as a freshmen? What year is he in? Just want to get an idea of the courses he might be taking…

Also, have you guys looked into appealing? On the website, it says that people who appeal will know about their decision before May 30th. That’s before we find out! Is it worth it to appeal and join the waitlist? I * might * have a new and compelling reason. I would feel bad about appealing though, like I’d be doing something shady lol.

Oh, and I emailed UCSD and asked them why I was offered a position on the waitlist instead of being accepted right away, and they gave me the same old spiel of “we had a limited number of seats, could only accept so many people, gave waitlist to most qualified applicants.” Didn’t bother asking anymore questions, although I might call them tomorrow and ask them about what it would be like to both appeal and be on the waitlist, and if doing one would affect the other (like what if you appeal, and they realize they still don’t want you…will you be taken off of the waitlist?). Perhaps someone will be kind enough to tell me why I was waitlisted – but I suspect it is because of the courses I was missing. It sucks because if they actually read my essays they would know that I already know how to do the stuff taught in those courses. Why do these schools even have us write essays if they aren’t going to read them? WHY? If it turns out that they are not actually going to read this mini-essay they are making us write for the waitlist, I’m going to be ****ed. PEOPLE SPEND A LOT OF TIME STRESSING ABOUT THESE THINGS, THE SCHOOLS SHOULD READ THEM, DAMNET.

Also – what did you guys write about in your essay? Why do you want to go to good ol’ La Jolla?

Haha i just got the email from UCSD telling me to check my status. When i got it i thought it meant they decided to accept me.

@Random_Monkey – I got the same thing! When I saw it, I thought, “That was a really fast turnover!”
Alas, they just sent out their emails really late. Another strike against UCSD. shakes head

Anyway, I spoke to the admissions office today. I asked them why I was not admitted again, and they said it was because I was below the 3.8 cut off for non-tags. However, I have a friend who was admitted with a 3.3 and he did not TAG, but he was an international student.

I asked how they will determine who is taken off of the waitlist, and they said that it was a toss up, and “it could be everyone, no one, or something in between.” I also asked how many freshmen were taken off of the freshmen wailist so I could have a way to gauge how they handle the waitlist. He said this year they accepted all of the freshmen off of the waitlist. However, he seemed to think the opposite would happen with transfer applicants – that they would not accept anyone off of the waitlist. This does not surprise me because the admissions might have been really different for freshmen and transfers this year. Because SD uses a point system to evaluate applicants, with GPA having the highest amount of points, it makes sense that under normal circumstances there would be a lot of UCB/UCSD, UCB/UCLA/UCSD, and UCSD/UCLA cross admits. A lot of the people who were accepted into two or more of those schools would probably favor the higher ranked school, so that would mean more spot openings for UCSD after the SIR deadline. This explains why there were so many openings for freshmen this year.

However, the situation is a little different this year for transfers because of the abundance of TAG applicants who got in with lower GPAs who were not competitive enough for UCLA or Berkeley. So, a lot of students who might’ve been cross admitted into UCSD and Berkeley or LA were rejected from UCSD and accepted into Berkeley or UCLA (or both) just because there wasn’t anymore room to make them offers after the TAG students were accepted. That means that a lot of people who were offered admission will probably accept it since SD will be the highest ranked school they were admitted to (and rankings usually play a large role in what school people chose to go to – even if it is mindless). They also probably offered more people admission this year because of TAG. So, yeah, long story short - we might be in trouble.

A few more things – I asked them if they will read the statements we have to write for the waitlist. The admissions rep said they might. At first I was turned off by this – but if they accept everyone (or no one) then they have no need to read the statements. Also, they said that last year they did not admit any freshmen off of the waitlist (probably to counter any “false hope” they might have given me after telling me that they accepted all freshmen off of the freshmen waitlist this year). However, I’m pretty sure the waitlist was poorly managed last year – so perhaps it was just managed better this year? Honestly, it seems weird to me that SD can manage anything besides research well (lol) after this experience.

UCSD KEEPS ****ING ME OFFF! MAYBE I WILL JUST GO TO DAVIS :frowning:
AND @ammstory, he went to UCSD as a freshman and he’s a junior now.

I got that same email, it hought they would accept me, guess not. maybe we will not even get into UCSD. oh well… i think that they are kinda stupid for making tag 3.0 that is SO LOW for UCSD. they should have made it at least 3.3 or something for this year.

I agree, 3.0 is too low for UCSD. I guess they didn’t anticipate the number of people who would take advantage of the online TAG process. However, I think 3.5 is too high for next year (it defeats the purpose of a TAG – which is to help “lower achieving” students gain entrance into a UC). Obviously I would qualify for a TAG next year if I chose to stay, but…it is still too high. Honestly, UCSD should just do away with TAG altogether. It does not work for them.

So waitlist is a lost cause for sure now?

No, I don’t think it is a lost cause. I’d say just do it…but keep in mind that there is a chance they will not accept too many people off of the waitlist or none at all, so make back up plans.

Well your last post sounded pretty pessimistic. Now I’m freaking worried.

hey guys- you should read this [Ms. Sun’s UC Admissions Blog - UCI Transfer Waitlist](Error)

I wonder if the appeal thing is true for UCSD.

hope so! all of our majors are not impacted at UCSD, so hopefully we will all get in ;] I’m sooo angry at them though =.= i may just settle for DAVIS just because i’m THAT ANGRY AT UCSD.

Yes, hopefully everything works out. I understand the settling thing because you’re just so ticked at UCSD, although I’d be perfectly fine with Davis (I’ve already SIRed there). I’m kind of worried that I will hear back at the very end of June from SD, and by that time I will have already signed up for classes at Davis. That would be so annoying.

You know what is else is annoying about all of this? Finding housing! It seems like I will have to put a deposit down on an apartment in Davis early if I want to live in Davis during the school year…but what if I end up getting accepted off of the waitlist from UCSD? Grr.

OMG THAT SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I guess you are living in an apartment.
I wanna live in transfer housing because I want dorm experience! Don’t wanna miss out on all the stuff my friends had when they were freshmen. ;D

So if you are perfectly fine with Davis, are you gonna choose Davis over SD?

I might choose Davis over SD. I don’t really know. Davis is closer to where my parents are, and although I have been living by myself for several years now, I think it will be difficult to be so far away from them. They still give me food when I’m broke, lol. Also, housing is cheap in Davis and I am in a long-term relationship (I’m living with my SO), so living in the dorms really isn’t an option for me. I also have the added plus that my SO’s parents own two homes in Dixon (which is right next Davis) and we might be able to live there for free throughout the school year (and we will move there during the summer while things are sorted out). It might also be easier for me to stand out in Davis, and I might do better there because of the laid back environment, which would be better for me since I want to apply to grad school. I will probably graduate earlier from Davis than SD as well, and be happier overall. People sound like they are unhappier at SD. There isn’t too much difference between the overall prestige of SD and Davis as well…

BUT San Diego has a much better computer science program, and it seems like they have many more research opportunities for undergrads. Not to mention, they are doing research in many more areas that I’m interested in like artificial intelligence. I’ve spoken to a few people about getting into grad school, and most people say it is a good idea to read the professors papers and find which sub-area of the subject you are studying interest you…that would be much easier for me to do with SD. Also, I want a broad education so I might double major in a “softer” subject at UC Davis to achieve such an education, but I might not have to do that SD because of their undergraduate college system. It seems like they have designed the system everyone will receive a broad education, especially at Revelle (the college I put as my first choice) where the focus is on a “classical education”. SD’s computer science department is also more on the cutting edge than Davis’, which is a big draw for SD to me because it seems like it will be more mentally stimulating.

Just out of curiosity - what are your reasons for wanting to go to SD? Sorry if that sounds ******y. I’m genuinely just curious.

Reasons why I want to go to SD

 1. My bf goes to SD, and I’m really sick of long distance
 2. Its farther away from home, and I want to experience life in socal
 3. ALL my friends are transferring to UCSD
 4. ALL My close high school friends go to UCSD
 5. UCSD is a better school, and it looks better on my facebook (haha jk)
 6. I don’t really like Davis, I think the campus is really ugly & I don’t like the area at all

Besides Davis, what other options do you have if you don’t get into SD?
