My brother just got the sad news that he got waitlisted for UCSD. I thought they had a point system and using previous years point system, he made it very easily with a 4.2+ gpa and 2200+ sat scores and very well written essays.

Is there any of finding out the point cut off? He already knows people with a lot less from his school getting in, is it because of his major choice? he did pick a tough major to get in, is it possible to maybe switch to the alternative major which will get him in the school since he's not really sure what he wants to do yet.

How many people get waitlisted? Since this is the second year that they are doing this what were the percentage of people accepted last year?

Any help will go a long way, he's very upset so is not thinking clearly atm so I'm doing some research for him.

I also got waitlisted, with a 4.2 gpa. One of my sisters graduated from there, and my other sister is currently going there. I thought FOR SURE I would get in, since I had a lot of extra curriculars and what not. I guess I was wrong. What major did he apply for?

I checked the UCSD decisions thread and was very surprised that a lot of well qualified candidates were rejected. I thought they had a point system last year, no?Your brother could call UCSD Monday to find out why he was rejected.

It doesn’t hurt to try. Go to the thread title ‘ucsd decision?!’ or something and someone posted a link explaining how the point system works and at the bottom they said that they would tell applicants what points they missed if they call. It was dated 2005 though so idk

I got waitlisted as well but my stats aren’t as good as your brothers. They’re actually much more worst. I was wondering if I should contact the admin regarding my status on the list before or after the due date (April 15)? I just want to know if I even have the slightest chance of getting out of the list.

0 of the ~1200 waitlisted last year were taken off last year. seems pretty unlikely

it seems like the people who were waitlisted were either borderline candidates or people with extremely high stats. i am probably a borderline candidate, w/ a 3.6 unweighted UC gpa and a 2160 SAT

I had my brother call today and they practically gave him no new information. It was clear by the way that they were talking that they didn’t have the application in front of them. Apparently this year they didn’t do the point system?

His first major choice was bio, and second was econ. When he visited SD, they told him to apply to bio since he is over qualified for that. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do at that point so they said you can switch from bio to anything so that should be fine.

Regarding the waitlist, they have you ranked according to your application but they won’t tell you your spot.

It’s really disappointing, because my brother has over 300 volunteer hours, several state 1-3rd place awards. His whole application was fairly strong and they won’t even take a second look at it.

He called and talked to 3 different people and they gave him nothing, so we are thinking of trying and appealing. Is there a point in doing that?

Well, their website said not to appeal unless your brother has new information to show them. I think he should just write the Waitlist letter, and hope for the best! I know a lot of my friends are rejecting UCSD, so our chances will be higher(: Does he have a back up school?
