bump squarehead...

Last year UCSD used a formula of 80% of your 5 SAT scores (SATI + 3 Sat II's) + (GPA *1000.) This year it's basically the same, with the 3 part SAT + 2 SAT subject tests. Taking lots of college prep courses gets extra points. Being ELC (top 4% in your school) gets points. Being poor gets points. First to college in your family, overcoming adversity, leadership, talent, community service, all get some points. It's on the UCSD website. Last year it took a total of about 7500 points to make the cutoff. Hard to do without some of the extra points. Oh yeah, here's an outline of the whole formula:

Step I - Academic Review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 4,500
Scores of All Required Exams 3,200
Number of "A-G" Courses Beyond the Minimum 500

Step II - Additional Academic Factors
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300
Educational Environment 300

Step III - Socioeconomic Factors
Low Family Income 300
First Generation College Attendance 300

Step IV Personal Characteristics and Achievement Factors
Demonstrated Leadership 300
Special Talents/Achievements/Awards 300
Community and Volunteer Service 300
Participation in Academic Development Preparation Programs 300
Special Circumstances/Personal Challenges 500

A-g?

UC has a specific pattern of high school courses you're supposed to take, Math, English, Sciences, Art, Humanities, Electives etc. They're listed in categories a though g. You can see what they are on any of the UC websites.

"Step IV – Personal Characteristics and Achievement Factors
Demonstrated Leadership 300
Special Talents/Achievements/Awards 300
Community and Volunteer Service 300
Participation in Academic Development Preparation Programs 300
Special Circumstances/Personal Challenges 500"

What exactly is leadership? President of a club? For community, how many points do you get with 200+ hours?? And what would be considered a personal challenge? Could it involve a problem (though not death) in the family?

There was a site last year which broke it down into specifics, but it's been taken down. The details probably change from year to year anyway - and the cutoff will, too. I think for leadership it was more like class officer; I think for community service 200 hrs got you the full 300 points, but I may be wrong...

^you give me hope <3 thank you

I have 7000 points from gpa/sats, but I have no idea where to get the last 500... sigh

Katt8: Believe me, you're not alone. Do some community service, cure cancer, you know, the usual...

I recieved a summa cum laude ( gold medal) on my national Latin exam..... where would that achievement fit into the UCSD points list.

bbuuumpppp

hurdlesrock-sorry if this may sound a bit rude, but why exactly are you bumping this? Hasn't kluge already answered your question?

yeah but he hasnt answered joelb question.....

o.. I see.. sorry about that

do any of u know if this is about the same point system for the other UCs like UCSB, UCLA, UCI, and UCD?

also can anyone tell me if this is a good estimation of the pts that i put compared to the ones i should really get.

STEP 1
Uncapped Grade Point Average..4000pts.
(4.0 weighted)

Scores of exams.................... 2664pts.
(1870 SAT, 760 French, 700 M2C)

of A-G courses...................0

(not sure what this is so i am putting zero)

STEP 2
Eligity in local context............0
(I am not in top 4 % of my school)

Educational Envi...................150
(@ my public SC school we have about 40 students go to Cal and UCLA and 15 go to Ivys out of a 350 student class... so does 150 sound reasonable)

STEP 3
Low Family Income.............0
(i am pretty sure i am not cuz i live in newport beach, OC)

1st generation college attend.....0
(if i am the first in the US, parents went to college in europe, does that still count as zero)

STEP 4
Demonstated leadership.....200
(leader of Boy scout troop, Ping-Pong Club President)

Special awards.................200
(Eagle Scout, Academic letter, CSF, academic decatholon medals in math and essay)

Community Service.........250
(about 170 hours c.s.)

Participation in academic development....200
(community college classes over the summer, Academic Decatholon, APs, Honors...)

Special Circumstances.....0
(none)

Grand Total: 7664 (not including # a-g courses beyond minimum and 1st generation college student)

ps. i dont mean to brag about this but i am just curious to know if i estimated properly the number of points for each topic that i put compared to how they really count it.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!!!

if your parent went to college in europe your not considered a first generation college attendant, 7664 without the a-g courses sounds good!

thanks alot hurdlesrock. i really appreciate your feedback! does the points compared to the activities i did sound right?

im not so sure about the Participation in academic development, because those are determined through programs like EAOP, MESA, Puente, Upward Bound and AVID, iono i dont think AP's and community college courses fit there.

oh ok...but for the a-g courses above the minimum...what is that? if i have taken 4 aps and 1 honors and 3 aps next year would that count?
