UF Accepted / Rejected / Waiting 2010 (Transfer)

Being an out of state student with a combined GPA of 3.85 (Hobart and CC) and 1560/2400 SAT, do I have any chance of getting into CLAS Economics?

your chances of getting in are as likely as me jumping out a window and going up.

Summer A transfer from CC with AA
3.1 overall GPA, 3.5 pre-professional GPA
CLAS college transfer, Biology.

REJECTED.
I knew I wasn’t getting in and I have already done everything for USF anyway so it’s not an upset or a surprise.
Good luck everyone :)

tbaccari and CSsaltiel,
I think you guys have a fair chance. As long as your overall college gpa is above a 3.5, you guys should be considered as competitive applicants.
A friend of mine transfered with a 3.6 (after being rejected as a freshman) from an out-state university.

I have to admit, it is not easy for out-staters, but it’s definately not impossible. After all, UF is only a state school, not an ivy league. By no means are you guys underqualified; and believe me, there are plenty of ■■■■■■■ walking by university avenue as I write this.

eddy:

I appreciate it, that one comment made me feel pretty crappy.

CSSaltiel,
You should check out that guy’s stats.
They are in the first page of this thread.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you got in, and he didn’t.

ahhh, it was all in good fun. i do hope you get in though, I’m just saying chances are very unlikely. I am also OOS, but once again, good luck!

and I think my chances are very low too, equal to yours!

eddy were you accepted btw?

Nah man.

I don’t know what takes them so long. I don’t even think there are many students applying for summer A, specially for engineering.

This waiting is going to force me to apply to other schools just in case. I already got accepted to CU Boulder for Aerospace Engineering, but I don’t think they will be too generous with the financial aid.

The only thing is that I don’t know where else to apply. All other schools in florida are crappy for aerospace engineering (other than embry-riddle, but that place is filled with nerds), and the out of state schools are sooooo expensive.

yeah, I’m not really familiar with aerospace engineering program (though I do embry-riddle is good). A lot of schools in the South are fairly reasonable OOS tuition, though I don’t know if any other SEC schools (or FSU for that matter) have decent aerospace programs. The wait is unbearable though, and it’s really unprofessional on our part. If I was in your position, I would wanna know what the hell I’m doing in two and a half months. I heard though that Summer A is only for Freshmen, or they don’t have Orientation for Summer A. You hear anything about this?

Eddy,

Thanks for the kind words. I can only hope that they give me the opportunity to prove myself at the school. I just want the opportunity to talk to someone in admissions foy my program and tell them the reasons I should be accepted. I wish the process was more than just a glance at a GPA and extra curriculars. GAHH!

yeah it would be nice if they could get back to us soon. I’ve been accepted to every other school that I’ve applied to (FAU, FIU, Nova Southeastern, and UMiami) so I know I have backup, but UF would be really nice! UMiami is looking really nice too, and they offer very nice transfer scholarships.

So what happens if you apply as a sophomore to UF???

as long as you have 60 or more credits and all of your pre-req classes completed by the time of your desired term, you’ll be considered for admission.

The interesting thing about UF is your chances depend greatly on what major and what college you apply. Some majors in certain colleges are beastly to get into. Kate4uf you probably did not get in because since all 11 universities in the state have biology departments and it’s such a common major that they rejected you.

Chancing somebody varies from major to major. Transfers are reviewed by the college and not the admissions office like freshman admissions.

Truth is UF is cutting back transfers to save money. If you get rejected it does not mean you are not qualified, like somebody said. I know idiots going there myself.

I am applying fall 2010 with a 3.2 gpa and. 3.1 pre professional gpa. My advisor at uf says I stand a powerful chance at cals. I have my aa and work 2 jobs to sustain myself on top of conducting research. Hopefully if sees my potential.

Cubanflorida,

I know what you mean about having to work fulltime to support yourself. I’ve had to work 40 hours a week since my freshman year to support myself, and on top of that I’ve been in clubs doing research and writing reports for the Student Managed Investment Fund here at my school. I wish I had the opportunity to sit down with an advisor and tell them these things that they don’t see on a transcript, hoping it would sway their decision.

Good luck everyone; Let me know what/when you hear from UF!

Tyler

Cuban,

I completely agree. CLAS is the largest college in UF and Biology is a competitive major within the college (a lot of us end up applying to the veterinary medicine at UF after our B.S. which is also HIGHLY selective and it is the only Vet school in the state). Perhaps had I applied to CALS instead I may have had a better chance, although I doubt it. I wish all of you luck in your educational endeavors :)

tbacarri, the state of Florida university’s system is set up to take transfers from Florida CC’s because there is nowhere else for them to go. It is the state’s articulation agreement (you can look it up) between the CC’s and universities. Years ago, they were more willing to accomodate out of state transfers but, due to budget cuts, they are not taking as many out of state students. Call the admissions office at Santa Fe to see how many credits you would need to try and transfer from there. You should also call UF before you make a move like that. Good luck!!

I have heard much about kids backdooring their way into UF through Santa Fe. Is it really that big of an advantage? If its just the Community College thing, then I would switch to Miami Dade College and get it over with.

tbacarri…you know exactly how I feel. I put down on my application the list of things I do with my time outside of school. Working 20+ hours in retail, plus the amount of work I do in my research lab. I wrote in my statement that I am unlike many students and that I have already dived into research, manage my time between 2 jobs and school, and stating I work to sustain myself financially. I am praying the Admissions Committee reads the statement.

I feel out of my league, Kate4UF you and I have very similar GPAs. Although I am applying to a different major and college, I cannot help but worry. Microbiology is a major that only a few Universities in Florida have. UF, USF, and UCF have the department. I emailed the advisor and given my credentials she says I have a good chance, IF i apply through CALS and not CLAS. The other nice thing is CALS does not distinguish between CC and University students, which means there is ample space.

CALS I have also heard has more slots for transfers than any other college, so again another boost for me. I hope I get in.

GO GATORS!!!

Well, although I am now happy with going to USF (I think it will benefit me to go there first and THEN try to get into UF for Vet school rather than trying to go to UF the whole way through…I have heard it’s very difficult to get into their vet school even if you went there for your B.S.) I wish I would have known prior to applying that CALS is “easier” to get into than CLAS. I didn’t learn until after applying that CLAS was the largest college at UF and had the most majors, making it the most competitive. :frowning:
But I am sure if your counselor feels optimistic you should be fine! GOOD LUCK!!!
GO GATORS…and GO BULLS! Haha. (They play each other this year…I’m in for a tough day! Haha!)
