So I just called UF and they said my UF GPA was a 3.8, is that good?
Woosah!
@Parman37 & @OldLady21 - while the email might’ve come from coalition, the address attached to it was from “freshman@ufl.edu”. I don’t think it means anything other than a reminder to check tonight. Perhaps it went to a junk folder if your son\daughter didn’t receive.
And to the post that reads “UF resumès go to the top of the pile, and UM to the bottom”, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. UF, FSU, UM, etc., are all wonderful universities. Some specific majors may be stronger at certain schools, but it’s time we stop with the UF>FSU, or UCF<UM, etc… A great education, good fit, socially and financially can be found at schools across our country. While we can hope that our children get into their “dream school”, that’s all we can do, hope. Once they hit the send button, it’s out of their hands. What matters is their happiness once they end up wherever they end up! Good luck to all, only four more hours!
@Natsumio did you just call and ask them what it was?
@IB2018 yeah I did, I think most schools will tell you what their recalculated GPA is for their school if you call
I agree with most of what you say “4boundforcollege” but people in most states are way too caught up in going to a lesser school in their state to pay less, when their child is so much better than that and could get in to a better school out of state and can not get in to their state school because of the numbers/competition. I own a company and when we hire out od college, we always look at the school when comparing candidates as do a lot of employers at “good” companies. Parents sell their kids short but sometimes staying in state because of money.
I got into Tufts, yet I’m pretty confident UF is rejecting me.
They posted on their admissions blog that they received a record number of applicants, and that many qualified students will be denied admission.
You will better off at Tufts! Yay!
@Parman37 Don’t read too much into this e-mail thing. This is only the 2nd year of the coalition app, and they are still working through the bugs. That, and we’re talking about over 40,000 applications…
@justdoesntmatter Easy to say, I guess, but so far, the best school my son has been accepted to is UMD. UMD happens to be 50k per year. 50k per year is a whole lot of money and I have three teenagers. So am I selling my son short if he doesn’t go there? Idk. I guess that’s a chance I’ll have to take. Florida colleges are way more affordable. If he gets into UF (which is dicey), then we are in luck. If not, he might not be going to the “best school” he was accepted to.
@Parman37 I’m just as crazy as the next person. This has been terribly stressful especially since we had our other acceptances weeks ago. I haven’t been as productive today as I should have been. Ha. My son is way, way calmer about it all.
@justdoesntmatta Well then your company is probably losing out on hiring a wonderful person who stayed in their home state to save money. Do you have children??? I have quite a few, and we are extremely fortunate to not have to factor in cost or location while going through the college process with our children (two down, two to go). That being said, MOST families DO have to factor in cost. No 22 year old should graduate college hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. People aren’t “way too caught up in going to a lesser college to save money”, they’re “caught up” in trying to give their child a good education while not going broke. And if we’re really going to nit pick, it’s GRAD school that’s most important. An affordable university, followed by perhaps a more prestigious (expensive) graduate school makes WAY more sense. That’s what Fortune 500 companies look for. And I know that, because my husband runs one. Oh, and he graduated from (gasp) a STATE school.
So my guess to add to the paranoia/hysteria is that they let the cat out of the bag last night by electronically sending their list to the Coalition which triggered the reminder emails from them to those that got in to check tonight. No need to make such a list of rejects who they can have a default notification page ready for. If you think about it, it would be particularly cruel to send out a reminder to check for those they reject
Or I am just a Crazy Dad. (Just got back from the mall with two bags of Seminole gear so we can brush off disappointment quickly…but kept receipts)
@danielle6849 I don’t think “justdoesntmatta” has children. Or maybe he/she does, but also has a money tree in their backyard
I have done absolutely nothing today but sit here and speculate why we didn’t receive the email etc. lol. Need to take a deep breathe and relax for another 3 and a half hours!
While FSU is not ranked as high as UF, it still ranked higher than most other Public Universities in the Southeast. Nationally they are ranked #33 for Public universities and are making great progress toward their goal of a top 25 and even top 20 school.
Much of UF’s and FSU’s rise in the rankings is due to the students. UF and FSU students all attend the same high schools, took the same classes, did the same activities, and share the same friends. My daughter’s best friend, went to FSU and should be graduating this semester and moving on to medical school.
Yes, UF is more selective, and a greater % of the students are in the top 10% of their class, but does it matter that much if one student was ranked 7 out 600, and another was ranked 17 out of 600?
It’s the same great group of kids.
I wouldn’t worry about not receiving the email. We did receive the email and my daughter only has a 3.6 and a 1270 SAT. We are out of state. I don’t think she will get in with her stats.
Wishing everyone good luck!
@CrazyDad9 Many schools send out reminder notices to all of their applicants. They don’t think about it as being cruel, but to remind every applicant that it’s coming, even the ones who won’t get great news. I don’t think the email last night was indicative of anything.
Remember, too, that there are several different types of admissions, including Summer and On-Line. Here’s a blog post that should unpack it all. Good luck to everyone. I echo the posters who say that as disappointing as tonight’s news might be, you or your child are not defined by where you went to school and there’s a fabulous place for everyone.
This is the blog post that explains the decisions: http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/blog/2018/02/09/decision-day.html
@Gator88NE Thank you for your comment on the ole FSU/UF debate. We have the benefit of not having deep roots in Florida and therefore no dog in the fight. The facts are that in today’s economy the undergraduate degree in the filed my son will pursue, some liberal arts degree, is practically worthless other than as a stepping stone on to grad school, likely law school. So I admit that our motivation for UF is more about not wanting our kid rejected from “the best” and having to “settle” for second banana. Also UF is a 2 hour drive and FSU nearly 4, and with him being our first to go off that seems less far away. So I am confident it will work out for him. However having lived through this I fear what his brother and sister (twins) will face when they have to do this is three years. With the Bright Futures deal all these state schools will continue to get huge numbers of apps and thereby make their admissions standards ridiculously high. Looking at FSU’s data this year it looks like UF’s last year. By the time the twins have to apply they might as well apply to the Ivy league schools as well as the standards will be similar.
Did UF publish the middle 50% for admits yet or do they do that after decisions are released?
