UF Hispanic High School Scholars Program

dark, I completely agree with you. While I do not agree with affirmative action, this program is in no way a handout. Anybody, regardless of race has to work hard to get anything they want. This is simply a meeting for people of hispanic races to come see UF, and I would be stupid not to go. I also do not believe this is the place for this discussion, this is a thread to talk about the Program that will be happening at UF no matter your beliefs.

mystifire:

It was completely up to your counselor on who got to attend. My counselor based it completely on class rank but limited it to those who truly wanted to attend UF. I saw the nomination paper, and the counselor was able to choose whoever he/she wanted.

At my school about 12 people were nominated but only 5 actually got invited so its really up to UF in the end

I completely understand how to get nominated, that was the easy part.

Like the previous poster said, it was ultimately up to UF on who goes and who doesn't and my counselor told me that UF bases who goes and who doesn't on PSAT scores.

Anywho.. i got invited to attend anyway, i found my letter today from yesterday's mail, i must have missed it; thank god i found it.

and FLBoy, go find somewhere else to spread your racist poison. Don't hate on us because we are strong, positive latino scholars.

There are three separate outstanding HS weekend during the summer for rising HS seniors: african-american, hispanic, and caucasian/asian.

The C/A one is the classically known Merit-Honors Outstanding High School Scholars Weekend. I worked that one last year. I don't remember see any black or hispanic people there. The AA and Hisp. one are usually at the end of June and beginning of July.

From an email: The Outstanding High School Scholars Program for Merit/Honors students will be held on June 10th and 11th (Sunday and Monday).

I meant it as an answer to those who believe that recruiting programs only target minorities...not going to name names

Oh ok.

The biggest advantage that participants got last year was ability to apply ED (non-binding). Not a issue this year.

Registration Closed for this years Hispanic Scholars Weekend. 6 days earlier than the deadline. Looks to have filled up pretty quickly

They put up the topic for the essay we need to bring.

"Your essay can be a very important part of your application. What you provide helps the university know you as an individual, independent of grades, test scores and other objective data.

Please submit one essay.
Remember to keep within the 400-500 word maximum length.

In the space provided, please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your family, your school or community activities, or your involvement in areas outside of school."

Here is the link for the site:

You gonna find out something about that essay but I probably shouldn't tell as it would hurt you more than help

dark962001, you can't leave us hanging now...

it's not really anything special

oh c'mon you have to tell us. we'll just push it to the side if it really does hurt us. i wanna know because i'm about to start writing my essay.

It is the same application essay for all students applying to UF for 2008. It is also now listed on the admissions website.

Where does it say that on the site? If you could provide a link it'd help, thanks.

What is it dark? You can't just say something and not talk about it lol.

Disregard my last post. I must not have been paying attention and misread the question..

Everyone post when you receive the info packets...does anyone know when theyre actually being sent out?

ASMAJ maybe? :)
