Hello! I am a freshman at FSU and I will be completing my AA in the spring. I am transferring into UF’s Bachelor of Public Health program. I would like to know how competitive this program is to transfer in to. My current GPA is a 3.4. I have a variety of volunteer experience and 2 shadowing of an orthodontist and bariatric surgeon. I will have completed all the pre-reqs and my AA by the end of spring. I would love to hear any sort of information from UF students and alumni about my chances of getting accepted as a transfer student. I am beyond nervous of getting denied from UF again Thank you to anyone who replies!
Hey - this is a bit of a late reply so sorry about that. I did my freshman year at FSU, transferred, and am currently a sophomore at UF. I’m happy to answer any of your questions in regards to my experience in general. Feel free to direct message me if you see this.
As for the Bachelor of Public Health… I’ve heard it’s very competitive. It is a limited access major. The good news is I believe current UF students don’t actually have any priority when it comes to admission into such programs, so your status as a transfer won’t hurt you.
If you don’t get into the program, I would recommend applying to another UF major and giving Public Health a shot again the following year. This is actually ideal for you since you don’t need to enroll in the bachelor of public health until you’re a junior. Here’s where it gets complicated, so I’ll use what I did as an example:
I started at FSU with a total of 36 credits from AP exams and dual enrollment classes. By the end of my first year I was technically a junior by credit (and I’d seen enough of FSU to realize that I’d made a mistake).
UF requires transfer students complete 60 credits before applying, and thanks to my AP credit, I qualified.
When I got to UF I thought I’d be forced to graduate within two years, but it turns out a mention of that policy from the admissions website doesn’t actually apply.
Since the state of Florida allows 132 credits to be taken post-high school for a bachelor’s degree, it turns out that my dual enrollment and exam credit didn’t actually count towards that number and I could take a full three years at UF. So I count as a second year student, not a “junior.”
I may have overcomplicated that, but the point is if you really want to get out of FSU, you can apply to any UF major that you meet the pre-recs for. Take your second year (now at UF) to build up your GPA, and then apply to the bachelor of public health.
If you don’t meet the qualifications for any UF major, take summer classes at your local community college through the florida shines transient program (google it and fill out the form). I took bio 2 and calc 2 last summer at my community college for this purpose.
Sorry if any of that was confusing. My transfer process was ridiculously complicated and there were bumps in the road literally every step along the way. Admissions is really rude to transfers and it takes a lot of patience to get them to do anything. Hope you see this - again, feel free to DM me if I can clarify anything or answer any other questions you have. Good luck.
