UGA or Emory?

I want to biology/pre-med, the thing is, Emory costs 40 grand a year...=(

Emory all the way. It has a great MD school as well, although nothing personal about UGA though,

even for 40 grand?

You'd get an excellent education in either institution- I just think it's worth it to be THAT deep in debt if you can help it.

you mean you don't think it's worth it? ;)

Something like that :)

lol I see your point because I plan to go to medical school after undergraduate, and I'll definitely be in debt for medical school so I don't really want to drown in debt, but still..no offense but I really don't want to go to UGA

What is it you don't like about UGA? UGA is pretty strong in the sciences and is involved with a lot of research in genetics, complex carbohydrates, and even stem cells, all of which students can get involved in. I know O-Chem is pretty tough here too, so I don't think you would need to worry about not being prepared for med school.

yeah but I prefer Emory just because it's a better school

Did you get into the honors program? If so, definately choose UGA over Emory. Plus, if you plan on going to med school, save money for that. I've also heard horror stories about the high flunk-out rates for Emory's Pre-med.

hey Bubbly088, I have a similar problem too because I'm trying to choose between Duke, my dream school ($50k a year) and UGA honors. I love Duke, but I feel really guilty about making my parents spend that much esp since I have two more siblings. See, the way I see it is that if you are SURE about medicine, then go to uga and then later on just go to a nice medical school. However, if you are unsure, Emory would be the best way to go. Since I'm actually unsure about being unsure, I haven't decided yet either, but I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

Another thing.... if you become a doctor, no one really cares where you got your undergrad degree from really because all that really matters is what medical school you graduated from.... but then again that doesn't matter too much either at least according to my dad, a doctor himself.

yeahhh I understand that...but personally (this is going to sound really selfish) but I feel that I would be much MUCH happier at Emory..

and maroon721, best of luck to you! That is definitely a painful decision! Duke is a wonderful school, it's definitely top-notch and I would say that it is worth the money, have you tried appealing the financial aid explaining your situation? I support that you go to your dream school..congrats on getting in! I heard that it was extra tough this year ;)

In general, where you get your terminal degree from matters much more than where you went undergrad. UGA's Honors program can get you into those more prestigious grad programs and as an undergrad in UGA Honors you'll probably have more research opportunities than you would at the other schools. If you really don't think you'd be happy at UGA, then it's probably best for you to go elsewhere, but I would at least give UGA a fair shake and a close look.

I think you would be happy at Emory because it seems to me you have made up your mind before you even posted. it is a financially difficult decision but I think your heart is at Emory for what I "read through" your posting

You should seriously think about it before deciding. UGA's pre-med program is excellent with a lot of choice and flexibility. The students have a very active program and invite top speakers on a weekly basis. The cost difference of 8k per year versus 45k per year is staggering, especially when you factor another 4 years of med school at possibly 45k per year on top of that.

If money is no object, then just go where your heart takes you.

yeah, I know that UGA's pre-med program is good, but Emory's is better, and on top of that, Emory has a bigger name..

yes, I do consider prestige as a big factor in my decision

not to mention that all of my friends (not even kidding) are going off to big name schools...

Bubbly, it seems you already know what you want to do. Everytime someone has suggested something, you retort that "yeah, but Emory's better." Seems the only thing holding you back is the money, which we can't help you with. But I can say that by reading your reasoning, I don't think you have really researched both schools carefully, including Emory, which you claim you think you "would be SO much happier at." Tell me, what led you to that conclusion? What specifically do you find attractive about either school? If right now, all you can think about is that Emory is "more prestigious" than UGA, and your friends are going to "big-name" schools and therefore, you should too... You haven't done either school much justice.
