Hello!
I am currently a freshman at the University of Hawaii at Manoa finishing up my first semester. I initially decided on UH over my other schools, but after a semester I don’t think I made the right choice. I love Hawaii and everything it has to offer, but living here is like a vacation that has gone on for too long. The dorms aren’t nice, the academics aren’t amazing, and the cost of living here is crazy. Does anyone have any suggestions, advice, or pros and cons? I know a decent amount about WSU as I am from Washington and know plenty of people who have gone there. Thanks for your help!
Unless you’re absolutely sure you want to leave, I’d give it two semesters before you decide to transfer. It’s pretty common for people to not have their their bearings after one semester, after which they start feeling more comfortable. That happened to me.
I applied to be a transfer for fall 2018, so I will be staying at UH for another semester
WSU is going to be obviously very different. Pullman is a small college town; it snows a lot in Eastern Washington during the winters; the student body is less racially/ethnically diverse than UH’s; the environment and atmosphere are much more the traditional/stereotypical “college experience.”
The academics at WSU are unlikely to be all that much different from the academics at UH, given that the student body is similar - similar test scores and GPAs on average when they were admitted. (UH students actually have slightly higher GPAs.)
Have you visited WSU? That’s really the only way to know if the residence halls are nice compared to UH. Pullman will definitely be less expensive than Honolulu.
Since you’re a Washington state resident will it be cheaper for you?
If you really want to transfer, add WWU for sure and UWash Bothell perhaps?
What reasons made you pick UH? The idea of a 4-year long vacation? Or a specific major?
I visited WSU, the campus, dorms, and classrooms are all very very nice compared to UH. Thanks for your advice!
I decided to go to UH for an international business double major, with a minor in Japanese. This school is ranked #7 for international business, and WSU is #15 for business. I also wanted to get away from home, not necessarily for the vacation aspect, but it definitely added to my decision!
Errr, in what ranking is UH ranked higher for business ? It might have been a flawed ranking.
All in all, it sounds like WSU should be cheaper and better suited to what you want.
WSU will be better for business overall than either WWU or UW-Bothell.
Wait for the acceptance then decide. The nice dorms at WSU fill up fast (first to sign-up system), so dorms next year are not likely to be a lot better. If you have friends already at WSU it won’t be hard to adjust as a sophomore.
