Uh-oh

It's every seniors worst nightmare, and I'm living it.

I got denied from everywhere (besides NYU-Poly, but meh). OSU-Main, NYU, Boston College, Vanderbilt, UNC-CH, and Duke. Denials from every single one.

Now, what's a kid with a 33 ACT and a LOW (maybe 3.0, 3.1) GPA supposed to do? I'm seriously asking you guys. What do I do over the next year, if I don't go to NYU-Poly, to make me more marketable?

I didn't do anything my first two years of highschool, and that overshadowed my last two (2.5-2.8 GPA freshman and sophomore, 3.5-3.8 junior and senior). So what would you guys hoenstly suggest I do? Internships? Volunteer work? NYU-Poly? If I got to NYU-Poly I know I'm going to transfer the next year, so this is really just a year long plan. Anyone have any ideas?

inb4 You're a moron for not applying to lesser safeties. I already know that.

Why didn’t you apply to any safeties at all? Duke, UNC, Vandy, BC, and NYU are all difficult schools to get into and I wouldn’t expect someone with a 3.0 to get in. Why didn’t your guidance counselor make you apply to more on par schools?

Either suck it up and go to NYU-Poly or go to a community college. At this point, you’re only in one school, so if you want to go to college, you really have no choice. Just go in it with a good attitude and try to make the best out of the situation.

Take the NYU Poly offer, and then try to transfer later. It is not a bad school by no means, as long as you can pay for it. There are some cool things you could do for a year, but if you get into a runt that is not good at all. Who knows, you may even like NYU Poly.

take a year off?

You said you didn’t get into OSU main, but you must have selected a satellite campus? (iirc, the application makes you do so) Were you accepted there?

some schools have rolling admissions, so perhaps you can find a school to attend in the fall that you like.

First of all, I feel for you. Don’t look back about where you applied, you’re a different case than most and you couldn’t have known, and can’t do anything about applying now other than rolling admissions schools or schools still accepting applications (there’s a thread on CC about that somewhere).
You can always take a gap year (as something no one’s pointed out yet) to volunteer somewhere if you think extracurriculars was one of your weaknesses, but it’s better to just go to NYU-poly and get a -great- GPA and participate in extracurricular activities. (If you’d rather go to community college to save money, that’s not a horrible option either, you’d just be missing out on the dorm experience. But my cousin went to community college and transferred to a state school and he’s successful now–it’s not so terrible.)

*I feel like an idiot, someone did mention gap year. =P But you’re a great student now and you will be in the future–you’ll probably be able to transfer to somewhere better, and either way, you’ll succeed no matter where you go.

What do you mean you “got into NYU-Poly but meh”??!! I know so many people who have already turned down much more prestigious universities, or are considering it. What have you got against us exactly? Besides the sensitive undergrads from there on CC lol =P

Did you visit? If not, want a tour? :P

I am sorry that you are feeling so bad right now. I do think that you need to spin this a bit and see that it could be a good opportunity. Your gpa is low for NYU Poly. But… They must have seen something in your transcript/application and thought you’d be a good fit. It’s a good school now and it will be getting better.

What is it that you are wanting to study? It NYU poly a good fit?

I’m not against NYU-Poly, but that’s my fault for making it seem that way. It’s my dad that is. He’s never heard of it and thus thinks it’s a mediocre school (even though I presented multiple facts to prove it wasn’t). I want to major in mathematics so NYU-Poly, being an engineering school, seemed like a solid place to get a good base for anywhere I want to transfer. My ONLY problem would be the size. 1700 undergrads is only 700 more than my high school.

As for the rolling admissions stuff, I filled out 3 applications today. University of Pittsburgh U of Alabama, and U of Texas- Dallas (I realized after that Texas has 4% OOS and that that was a waste of time).

@static75: No, I haven’t taken a tour. Could you point me to a website with some pictures of the place? That’s another thing that my dad won’t let go.

low GPA…you dun goofed

since when is 3.0 gpa low? damn you grade inflation

also, community college

^Umm, 3.0 is straight Bs. Or if there were any As, there would be a C for each one. That’s pretty awful. No offense.

But then again, I hold myself to higher standards. I guess some people might not.

it used to be average

Nah, umerical, HeWhoPwnz is right. 3.0 is pretty bad.

A 3.0 isn’t bad by any means. It’s just bad for the schools you applied to. That’s why I’m really confused. Did your counselor just think you were really special and allow you to do that? Did they know any better? Did they just not care?

Take it this way, your options are pretty much limited to:

 1. Go to the school you got into.
 2. Take a gap year and reapply for more reasonable schools (since your parents aren’t huge on the school you got into. =/)
 3. Go to community college. Transfer.
 4. Don’t go to college/Get a job/Join the military. Etc.
 5. Apply rolling admissions

As I see it, that’s a lot of options. You should explain to your father that you only got into one school, so if he wants you to go to school, that is your only option. Especially since he seems to think it’s mediocre… Well CC’s have the reputation of being mediocre.

Personally, I’d just go to the school I got into… but eh. I feel for you. One of my friends applied to 11 schools and only got into 3. Only 2 have the program she wants and she didn’t really apply to either of them because she wanted to. One was an easy application (safety) and the other her parents wanted her to apply to… So she’s kinda in the same situation.

You could go to community college or find some great opportunity in the area to show colleges you didn’t just waste away a year of your life…

I posted pics of Poly and uploaded them to CC but if you want more or newer ones or of anything in particular, let me know!

I know quite a few math majors! They score major internships, and the math department is very good here. Thorough, fair, challenging.

Come, bring your dad, I’ll give you an awesome tour. My dad thought Poly was mediocre too, and he wanted me to go to Carnegie Mel, but I basically wasn’t feeling it. Heh. Dads lol.
