Well, it’s almost time to start applying to schools for Fall 08 admissions. Now, here’s the confusing part. I’m applying to quite a few schools, however, I’m not sure exactly when to apply. The thing is, different schools have different acceptance release dates. For example, JHU, Brown and Cornell don’t release their decisions until late May. However, University of MD releases there’s much earlier, as does George Washington. Suppose I get an acceptance letter from the latter schools (GWU and UMD) and don’t get any responses from the other schools. My point is, I know that schools only give students limited time to accept their offer of admissions. I don’t want to accept one of the schools only to have the possibility of getting accepted into one of the “better” colleges. I don't want to screw myself over and get stuck at a school that I applied to as a safety when I know that there's a possibility I get into a school I really wanted to go to. Yes, the possibility is slim, but there's still a chance. Do you guys see my dilemma? I’m very worried about this. What should I do?

When I was transferring, I kinda had a sense of what schools were strongly considering me. I applied to Berkeley and UCLA...Berkeley kept sending me info (financial aid, etc.)...I didn't hear a peep from UCLA. I was accepted to Berkeley, and rejected by UCLA.

I understand your dilemma, but I wouldn't worry about it until and if it actually occurs. Perhaps you could ask the schools you were admitted to for a decision extension...worth a try.

just let them know what's going on if it happens. Rare, but it happens, and most schools are very understanding. People talk about the college admissions process as if UCLA, Berkeley, GWU, etc. (the actual schools themselves) are making these decisions. Look at it as PEOPLE are making the decisions.. if a situation like the one you described ever did occur, all you would have to do is make a phone call and explain to the adcom that you have other offers already on the table.. etc.

Yeah!!! Call the admission office!!!

Please read the Transfer Admissions 101 sticky thread. This issue is covered there.

Andale, thanks so much for that tip. I read it, and it basically answered a lot of questions I had.
