uh oh...

Well, GWU is one of the schools I've been seriously considering. I want to major in International Affairs with a concentration in International Politics. I know how big economics is for IA majors. I have a 3.6 GPA, it went down quite a bit because I got a C in Economics. I'm usually pretty good at Economics, but 6 classes plus a job killed it. I just didn't study like I should have - not to mention my professor was difficult. What should I do? Should I bother applying as a transfer to GWU as a IA major with a minor in Philosophy? I got an A in Political Science and As in all my English and History classes, not to mention 2 honors projects. I visited the school a couple of months ago and I was sold. Should I bother applying with a C in Economics or am I completely screwed?

how low did it make your GPA?

a 3.6. I was taking 6 classes. I have about 48 credits. Two honors projects completed.

is your current college a community college or a 4 year university? if its a top 4 year university you might still have a chance (assuming your ecs, recs, and essay are in line). a 3.6 is good considering it was hit with a C. try to explain that you had a job and whatnot which caused you to be busier than usual causing you to get that grade but try not to make it sound like you couldnt have handled it regardless of what you could have done otherwise it might work against you.

Community College located in Southern Maryland. GWU isn't the hardest school to get into, but the fact that the C was in Economics is what's scaring me. I know IA majors must take at least 4 economics classes.

Apply...transfer cums are different than HS averages. You've already demonstrated to them that you're a good student and can succeed carrying a full load (very full in your case). The 3.6 is decent for transfer - might hurt your chances for scholarship/grant $, but proably not if you have need based.

I'd be surprised if they turned you down outright...sometimes they make you submit spring grades, but that's usually for freshmen or those with fewer credits...but by all means, apply ....post in the future and let us know.

My D is applying for transfer with just over a 3.5 for Communications. Can't get in if you don't apply.

If you are at a community college, then that you means you will definitely be transferring, right?

Then, I think you should go for it, unless you want to limit your apps due to expense of the application fees. Make your application as strong as you can; lead with your strengths. Those Honoros projects, depending on subject matter, should certainly help you.

Also, I would seriously consider taking some type of Econ class this term and do well in it. If you decide to write a short essay re the problems you had with the first econ class (might or might not be a good idea), you could then refer to doing well in this later Econ course. Maybe you can report a mid-term grade or even get a rec from the prof involved. Just an idea.

Good luck to you.
