I am a high school graduate looking for a good university where I can do my pre med. I hope to complete 3-4 years of pre med in college and get into a good med school outside texas. I have applied to both universities but my house is in Houston near UH. My parents insist that I stay with them and go to UH but I really want to go to Pitt as I believe it is a much better university for getting into med school. What I want to know is if I were to stay in UH and get my degree, will I be accepted into a good med school outside Texas?
You can go to a good medical school outside of Texas if you go to the University of Houston for undergrad - it’s a good school and med schools care more about what you did in college than where you went. As long as you do well, complete the course sequence and do the activities expected of pre-med students you will be competitive. Houston is also an excellent city for medical studies given the proliferation of medical research and excellent hospitals there. Furthermore, med school is expensive, so staying home and commuting to UH might be a good bet so you can save money for med school.
Pitt will be quite expensive for an OOS student from TX. Are you or your parents wealthy enough to cover the full cost of Pitt? Or are your grades and test scores high enough that you are competitive for some big merit aid?
However, I am curious about why you are so adamant about attending medical school outside of TX. Texas is one of those states that gives strong preference to in-state students for med school, so your chances are actually higher inside of TX than outside; furthermore, if you go to one of Texas’s very strong public medical schools, you can pay in-state tuition! If you get an MD in TX you can practice anywhere, so I don’t see why you wouldn’t choose to pay less and get a great MD.
Are you already admitted to Pitt? As an OOS going to Pitt undergrad (with no merit scholarships and no need based aid) you are likely to be paying close to 40-50K per year…just for undergrad. And then you want to go to med school outside of Texas? Are your parents going to pay for this or are you going to be borrowing all of your medical school $$?
