UIUC Business v. Indiana (Kelley)

I'm from Chicago and plan on returning there when I graduate. I was accepted to both business schools. I visited both and liked their campuses. Everyone at each place was very positive. (Although UIUC's business school already has its new building, I'm told Kelley is starting construction on its new one next year.) With the scholarship I received, Kelley would cost about the same as UIUC. I'm not sure what my concentration will be. It probably won't be entrepeneurship. It might be finance or accounting but I really have no idea.

Any thoughts out there? Thanks.

IU Kelley is a more prestigious business school in the east coast, but in chicago specifically U of I is better especially for accounting. I got into both and will choose U of I easily if I have to pick between the two and no other schools.

You said you wanted to work in Chicago but if it helps any, Illinois is viewed as a lot more prestigious in California. There’s no doubt in my mind that Indiana has a good program, but with the facilities and higher caliber of student, I would recommend that you go to UIUC.

Why is UIUC’s business program viewed more prestigious?

^According to the rankings, Indiana is more prestigious but when talking to people about college, Illinois rolls off the tongue a lot nicer. The two schools are comparable but I think Indiana is much too easy to get into to be considered a prestigious business school.

Well, UIUCs accounting program consistantly hovers around the best program in the country, but Kelley tops Illinois slightly in most other business programs. You’re going to be better off instate than OOS on the cost front, and tuition at UIUC is fixed for 4 years, so don’t be put off by what you’re hearing on the news, your talking about an avg annual increase in tution of about 4.5%, which is typical (unfortunately). All state schools are suffering in this economy, but, at Illinois, at least you’ll know what your tuition will be for the next 4 years.

As far as Illinois rolling off the tongue more easily…you gotta be kiddin me. Great reasoning there.

I don’t know about you but I chose what schools I applied to by the way they sounded.

Sorry about that one. I’m glad you guys thought it was funny though. What I meant to say was acceptance into Illinois business is more of an accomplishment than acceptance into Kelley. Either way, I wouldn’t choose a school solely based on rankings.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I think I am going to accept UIUC. A key tie-breaking reason is that, just in case I decide to switch out of the business school, the caliber of the other students accepted at UIUC appear to be much much stronger that Indiana (based on the Kiplinger survey I read). (I know that’s not the case with Kelley, whose students are comparable to UIUC.)
