UIUC Class of 2023 EA Thread

4.0 UW, 35 ACT, 10 APs & sports + all ECs
Got invitation for “LAS James Honors Scholar program” on January 9th and registered.

@quizpell 4.3 W GPA (4.0 UW), 33 ACT, school does not rank

I keep reading that a bit under 50% of deferred get accepted. But, I gather, a pretty good percentage of them get admitted to general studies or a second choice major. Likewise, I’m guessing the percent of those who get off the deferred list to a competitive engineering major is quite low.

My son applied for CE as a first choice major, and did not make a second choice. He was deferred.

SAT 1480 (M=800; E=680)
SAT 2 (M = 800; physics=700)
GPA was 3.9 or somesuch
OOS white male (Ohio)

It seems to me that the only way an applicant comes off the deferred list is if his major didn’t fill with EA. I can’t see that being the case for CE, can it?

He’s admitted for engineering at Purdue, Ohio State and Case.

This is tough decision. Do you hang on and HOPE UIUC admits in March, thereby falling behind on choices for good dorms at Purdue, Ohio State, etc? Also, UIUC has one HUGE advantage in my opinion - you get admitted directly into your major. Not true at Purdue or Ohio State (or even, I think, Virginia Tech (could be wrong about that one).

D got deferred for CS earlier. Just wondering what is the recommendation on sending LOCI to UIUC as their letter clearly stated no additional documents will be accepted? She got in to Purdue CS but UIUC is still number one choice.

Sending a LOCI would be pointless. If sent, it will not be provided to those who actually make admission decisions.

Accepted

OOS (International student currently attending a high school in California)
Biology
Weighted GPA: 3.917
Class rank: 50% (right at the middle, but my counselor said that our school doesn’t report class rank)
ACT: didn’t take
SAT: 1490 (M=800; R&W=690)
SAT II: took Math II and Biology-E, both below 700 (accidentally sent these to colleges)
Chinese, Female

FOR ALL THOSE WHO GOT ACCEPTED… we have a discord server of current students at the uni and admitted students, hit me up if you wanna join

Just wanted to throw another data point out there for anyone wondering about notification of merit awards…

D19, who was admitted to the College of Applied Health Sciences, got a merit award letter dated 11 Jan. The letter said she got a $2000/year scholarship from the College and $1000/year for the Campus Honors Program.

She didn’t apply for need-based awards, so that’ll be it for her.

@ChicagoSportsFn, Congratulations to your daughter. Is she instate?

@Ranipetgirl

Yes, she is in-state.

She will decline the acceptance to UIUC.

@ChicagoSportsFn, Thanks for your response. I guess there aren’t any scholarship awards for OOS students.
Has she decided on another school?

@Ranipetgirl

I’m not so sure about that. There are College-specific merit awards for OOS students, but they’re not earth-shattering by any means. If you’re talking about 1/2 or full tuition merit scholarships for OOS students, then you may be right. I don’t think UIUC has that available. But looks like they have $1000-$2000/year College-specific merit scholarships available. Not much in the grand scheme of things, but every little bit helps. My D16 got into UIUC too. Stats were slightly below that of D19. D16 was designated a James Scholar with, if I recall correctly, maybe $1,500/year merit scholarship. D16 went to another school.

D19 got into schools higher on her list than UIUC, so she will attend one of those schools.

Thank you @ChicagoSportsFn . I will look into it. Our dd is admitted to the James Scholar honors program. She is waiting on results from other schools

@Ranipetgirl There should be some $$$ that come with the James Scholar Honors program. When my D16 was informed of being accepted in the James Scholar program, there was an award amount in the same letter.

Hello everyone and congrats to all those admitted! I see some people are hearing back regarding the LAS James Honors scholars program and I was wondering if we think those invitations are done being given out? My daughter is a very gifted student, but we have yet to hear back. Her major is in the liberal arts and science college. Her stats:
In-state
4.4 weighted gpa
33 ACT
Really great ECs
U of I was one of her top choices but if she doesn’t get into this program I’m afraid it’ll be taken off of her list:(

@dancemom2012 I don’t think they send out invitations after you’ve been accepted. You could always call the admissions office and double check, however. For what it’s worth, I was invited to the LAS James Scholar program with a 5.498 weighted GPA and 34 ACT.
Just curious, why is being a James Scholar the deciding factor? Just my 2 cents, I don’t think it’s worth not going to UIUC just because you’re not in the honors program. She can always apply to the program after freshman year.

Yeah she got accepted for early action already so that’s why I was a little nervous with her. Just don’t know why she wasn’t admitted into the honors program when her friends with lesser stats were… for her I think she just likes the benefits some other schools have offered for her from their honors colleges. But we shall see, id prefer for her to stay close to home!

@Plimpington2, the engineering college does not fill any of its programs completely during the EA phase. It likes to wait until all applications are in to make a lot of decisions. What does occur is that certain majors can fill with those who choose it as first choice, CE is one of those, and that is the reason it cannot be made a second choice.

Your son is still being considered for CE, although you likely should consider the chances now somewhat less than before. In fact, that is the only major he will be considered for because failure to put a second choice means UIUC will not admit you except for that first choice major. see https://admissions.illinois.edu/FAQ/applicant-freshman#questionThirtyFive and under Second Choice Major click on “What happens if I don’t select a second choice major?”

As to honors programs and scholarships mentioned above:

  1. There is the Campus Honors program which is offered to the top applicants to the University (somewhere under 200 to get about 125 to enroll), and that typically comes with a partial tuition scholarship (varies annually but typically in the $5,000 range).
  2. For each college, there is the James Scholar Honors program, and each college typically offers that to about the top12% of its applicants. There is no scholarship attached to that honors program, although some may be offered merit scholarships simply because many in that program have stellar credentials. As many at the university know, the main benefit of the James Scholar Program is priority registration. For any particular class, James Scholars get to register before others for classes each semester and thus have the best chance of getting courses that are in high demand at ideal times of the day
  3. The Business college has both a business honors program, which usually comes with a partial tuition scholarship and offered to top applicants, and the James Honors program.
  4. As to other scholarships go here to begin research: https://admissions.illinois.edu/Invest/scholarships-all. As you will see, there are only a small number of full-tuition or full-ride scholarships and those are reserved for in-state students. Nevertheless, there is a $10,000 scholarship for top applicants from OOS (how many varies). Then the various colleges have their own scholarships, with engineering leading the field in having the lion's share of all scholarships, particularly for incoming freshman. None of those are full-tuition and amounts vary significantly among those awarded with many being in the low thousands, but what can happen with some top OOS applicants in engineering is that the combination of a university scholarship and college scholarship can come close to covering OOS tuition.
  5. As to being informed, the fact that you were not informed within a few weeks after EA admission likely rules out being offered an honors program (other than business which now requires another application for its honors programs after acceptance), but does not necessarily rule out a possible partial scholarship, although chances are reduced.

@drusba Thanks for the information. A quick question on item 3 in your above post. Is the business honors scholarship designated strictly toward tuition or can it be used for other expenses (e.g., room and board)? The business honor program website states “A 4 year renewable merit scholarship”.
