hi guys, how is the comp sci there at UIUC? Is their department up their with MIT/Stanford? Is it even worth applying? Do you think saying "I got into MIT" is better or "I got into UIUC" is better? So is it worth applying?

Comp sci is one of UIUC’s most visibly distinguished departments. For undergrad studies, I think differentials in rankings among the top schools are meaningless.

The only complaint I have so far, as a UIUC CS student, is that the intro classes use Java instead of Scheme, Haskell, or similar language.

Well obviously MIT has more prestige. I can’t believe you’d even ask. I checked online though, and UIUC looks like it has a great CS program, and I really like how you can get a software engineering certificate (which is what I want to do). I wouldn’t be surprised if UIUC’s CS program is up there with MIT/Stanford or even better.

I’m majoring in CS and minoring in Astronomy and UIUC is one of my top choices, however MIT is MIT and it would obviously be better to say “I got into MIT”.

well of course MIT has the “name prestige” but Illinois, especially can be seen in recent years, continuously gets higher and higher in rankings (we passed Stanford in 2010 rankings if I don’t remember wrong) so yeah, Illinois is one of the best schools in CS, I feel it’s difference as a student here.

Well, if you get into MIT, go there; if not, UIUC is definitely a good choice.

UIUC is well known for computer science. You guys are showing your age, or lack thereof.

Hal was created there.

UIUC is recognized to be one of the top 5 in the country for CS.

And the price is right…tuition is lower than MIT and they also give merit scholarships, which MIT definitely does not. So…great value.

I know recent CS grads from UIUC who are now working at Microsoft and Google, to name a couple of companies you may have heard of.
