Hopefully I'll transfer to UIUC in fall 2010 as a finance major. However, if I do not get into the College of Business and choose economics as my second choice major, what are the disadvantages of getting an econ degree vs. finance degree from UIUC? Do econ students have the same access to all the career fairs, career services etc... as the finance students do in the College of Business? I plan to pursue a career in investment banking upon graduation; so I want to make sure all the same networking events, on-campus recruiting etc... that are available to College of Business students, are also available for econ majors.

Personally, I love finance while I find economics to be unappealing. But I just want to best position myself to secure an investment banking offer upon graduation. With that said, would a finance degree from DePaul University be better than a economics degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign?

Finance is more relevant to the subject of IBanking. If that’s what you want to do, you won’t go wrong with finance at UIUC. Keep in mind that networking is also key for getting a job in business. An econ major with good networking would get the job over the finance major without it.

Zak, I just found this post and I am “hoping” to go into the same program at uiuc. I also applied to DePaul and other local schools, and I can say from my friends and family that Job placement is easier at DePaul, but better companies at UIUC.

I really hope to get into UIUC, but unfortunately my college GPA dropped to a 3.7 since my first semester at my community college. My cousin graduated from DePaul with a major in finance and is making close to 140k in chicago after a recent pay raise. So, I guess it depends on your networking skills.

And if you don’t mind me asking are you applying as a freshman or a transfer?

Yep, I’m applying for finance as my first choice and as a second choice supply chain management. I thought about putting my second one under economics, but all I really want to do is Finance, particularly corporate or ibanking.

As for my cousin, I don’t know his whole story, but I know he started off at 60k or so in 2008, and sometime last year he got the big pay raise. Although I couldn’t tell you what company he works for, He works at the SEC in Chicago as a financial anaylst, and got his job through the internships DePaul helped him get. He was telling me over christmas that a lot of his friends that he did internships were getting these big pay raises as well, so hopefully that’s a good thing for us… I’m supposed to be job shadowing him one of these days, so i’ll have to let you know how that goes.

And another thing, my friend from Illinois Valley Community College just got accepted over the weekend for computer science! So that means that they’re already accepting people! Hopefully the CoB hurries up and accepts us lol

the business school is much harder to transfer into than any other school at u of i because, among other reasons, they have a very high retention rate so they can’t accept as many. this is what ive heard directly from admissions officers.
