I know I made an earlier post months back about whether to go to UIUC or UChicago but I got deffered from Chicago. But even if I get accepted, I doubt I'll be going there simply based on the price. Now, I am stuck between two options of UIUC and Loyola. I know that based on rankings Loyola isn't even in the same league as UIUC. But I'm getting a merit scholarship at Loyola that will make it almost $10,000 cheaper than Illinois each year. Plus, it's really close to my home and I've realized that Law Schools (for the most part) don't seem to really care where you go for your bachelor's as long as it is respectable and you manage a high GPA/LSAT.

As far as their respective Law Schools. UIUC's is almost top 25 now and getting higher every year but my research shows that, here in Chicago (where I want to work), law firms hire MANY students from Loyola. So where do you guys think I should go, thanks for any help, really.

Loyola Marymount or Loyola University Chicago? Law firms in Chicago probably hire many lawyers from Loyola University Chicago School of Law simply because of location... not Loyola Law School (Loyola Marymount's law school in LA).

^I'm guessing you missed the price "issue". And why? I know a couple of people who turned down Chicago for UIUC, it's just not a school for everyone.

Wait a minute, neverborn don't you actually attend the University of Chicago? Look, it's a great school and I would love to go there but unless I get some aid (which I doubt I will) I won't go.

For purposes of law school admission, it doesn't matter if your degree says UIUC or Loyola Chicago. GPA and LSAT will both be far more important. So, strictly concerned with law school, you would want to attend the institution where you think that you can get the highest possible GPA and LSAT.

Since you can get into a good law school from either Loyola Chicago or UIUC, choose a college based on factors that don't relate to law school. This way you don't have to worry about the common scenario where one sets himself on law school, then ultimately decides law is not for him.

Consider tuition, social life, location, academic strengths, and student bodies of UIUC and Loyola, and then make your decision based upon these factors rather than worrying about law school.

Even though UChicago has notoriously bad financial aid, the effort required to write another essay or interview after your deferral is well worth the fairly small chance of successful admission and financial aid.

^I haven't given up on UChicago and I have contacted the school since receiving my defferal statement. But based on what you've said, I should go to UIUC since the opportunities there (and prestige, education, life) make it more appealing.

Are we still talking about law? Maybe I missed something. If we're talking UGrad, not such a big deal. It's not UChicago bias. Replace UChicago Law with Northwestern Law, and you're still insane.

If you're talking about undergrad, I can't read and take back what I said.

Really, for UIUC vs. Loyola Chicago - which school do you like more? I am intimately familiar with both and would choose Loyola based on personal preference - the campus isn't as huge (UIUC's is ginormous) and the city of Chicago is quite awesome. UIUC also has one of the biggest Greek scenes in the country, which I despise. Champaign/Urbana is boring.

I have been debating UIUC over Loyola as well. Because my GPA is not that fantastic I prefer some place where I can take some time to study without any interruptions. Also, a place with generous grading system is preferred. Guys what are your thoughts on that? is Loyola a good place to get a BS and still be respected as much as UIUC in the job market?(Just in case I change my mind about the Law school)

^Well, I doubt that. I mean if your question pertains to prestige(not involvng going to law school) then UIUC would be much better. It's more well known and respected. I know rankings shouldn't mean so much but US News ranks UIUC 41 in the nation and Loyola 112. But really, where do you want to work?

That and I honestly just didn't want to spend so much if I was going to law school afterwards. I applied to UChicago simply because I really love the school and its philosophy. UIUC, I've found, is just a better "bang for your buck" school. Northwestern just didn't seem worth 40k a year especially if I was going to go to law school afterwards.

Have you checked the price of law schools lately? Go to undergrad where it is the most economical, if you want to practice in Chicago Loyola is just fine. The law school at Illinois is much less expensive than any other law school in Illinois except for the regional state schools (ie NIU), so for the biggest bang for your buck you should go to Loyola for UG and Illinois for law school. You can clerk in the summer in Chicago firms and they do lots of interviewing at Illinois so not being in Chicago won't hurt you.
