Umass Amherst Accounting

Hey all,
I’ve been looking at colleges a lot lately, for when I get out the army here shortly. I’ve been wanting to get my bachelors and masters in accounting, so I can take the CPA exams. When I was deployed, I took a few colleges classes, because the army covered them. Unfortunately, when I asked my top choices about applying, because I took those courses which gave me 6 total credits, I’d have to apply as a transfer student, and unfortunately, I don’t meet the credit requirements, since most of them require 24 or more. I’ve started to look into some more, and so far, UMass is the only school that (I believe) I can get accepted because of my low credit count, without going to community college first, and that the GI Bill will cover all my tuition expenses for. I couldn’t find out too much about the accounting program there, so I just wanted to get some input from you guys. My ultimate goal is to get a job in accounting or finance, ideally in Boston. Will UMass give me a solid chance at that, with a high likelihood of succes? Or am I better off going to community college in St Louis, and then transferring to one of my top schools, like Michigan State, Missouri, or Texas? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I don’t know about transfer students but my daughter is a sophomore at Umass Amherst in the Isenberg School of Management. She is double majoring in Finance and Economics. She loves it! Isenberg is now ranked 33rd in Undergrad Business schools in the country.

A friend of my son’s is a senior this year. After interning at a local bank for his first two summers, he interned at Ernst and Young in Boston this past summer and was offered a job with them after graduation already.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

That really seems unfair. So the colleges will not let you apply as a freshman because you took 6 credits at a college? Wow. I would suggest you contact the school directly and explain your military service and the situation. I suspect most would love to have you on campus. Good Luck.
