Still nothing today online or in the mail. I’m beginning to think he will be waitlisted, too, since that seems to be what’s happening to everyone else this week.

No letter in the mail today, either. It’s also not on their site.

No leter in the mail today, Saturday, either. Still says under review on website. This is cruel and unusual punishment.

Currently attending Iowa

GPA: 3.3/4.0

High School GPA: 3.2

My son received his letter today, finally, another victim of the waitlist. He will now have to decide between the others who accepted him. We are very sad. UMass Amherst was a very good fit for him.

^ Sorry to hear that. :(

I found this on another web site:

of applicants offered a place on waiting list: 3,230

accepting a place on the waiting list: 113

of wait-listed students admitted: 91

% of students admitted from waiting list: 81%

There was no year, so I assume it was for last year. But the odds seem pretty good if you go on the waitlist, because it seems not many do.

I guess those numbers are from 2008. Here are the 2009 numbers:

Students Offered Wait List 3,997
Students Accepting Wait List Position 214
Students Admitted From Wait List 170
% Admitted From Wait List 79%

Still pretty good odds if you get on the wait list.

Those statistics seem very high for waitlist acceptance. I cannot find those anywhere online. The year also makes a huge difference with the change in economy and all.

Only info I found and it was not given the year (could be old info)

392 offered waitlist (seems low to me)
222 accepted waitlist
86 enrolled

The information directly from UMASS states that they are unable to offer admission to the majority of waitlisted students. I would go by that, which means definitely have your student signed up with another college for the fall.

The 3230/113/91 numbers came from the “The Best 371 Colleges, 2010 Edition” by the Princeton review. The 3997/214/170 numbers came from another college web site, I have no reason to doubt them as all their other numbers seem ok.

I haven’t found any numbers for 2010.

I’m liking your numbers. Princeton Review is reputable, so there is hope.

2010 and 2011 is a whole new picture, as UMass withdrew their automatic Spring admission program to waitlisted students. The change in the economy has affected most people’s financial picture, therefore making UMass a more desired choice for many.

http://www.umass.edu/oapa/publications/cds/common_data_set.pdf

Fall 2010 Common Data Set

waitlist: 4337/1308/102

so slightly less than 8% were accepted off the wait list.

Well, it only means 8% accepted. It doesn’t tell you how many students were offered a spot off of the wait list and then turned it down. Maybe they had to go through 1200 kids on the waiting list to get those 100 acceptances, we don’t know.

Given that the number of students accepting a spot on the wait list was 6-11x the previous two years, one wonders how many students who accepted a WL spot were really serious about it. I wonder why the number increased so dramatically.

^ Guess I should have read to the bottom first:

“Admitted student: Applicant who is offered admission to a degree-granting program at your institution.”

So yeah, only 8% were offered admission off the wait list last year. Not an encouraging number. :(

I was accepted to Commonwealth Honors College as undeclared but also offered a spot as a classical voice major in the music school. I received a Deans Scholarship for $2000 and a Chancellors for $1800 if I decide to take up music. I’m seriously considering UMass because I was given so many grants and scholarships and I would only have to pay $2500 per year.
I’m from southeastern Mass and I go to prep school so a public university may be a nice change!:
SAT: 1350/2060 M700 R650 W710
SAT 2: Bio (freshman year) 610, Chem (sophomore year) 690, French (junior year) 800
APs: AB Calc 5, AP French Language 4
GPA: 4.0 unweighted
APs, honors, sports, theater, volunteering, studied abroad in France my juniors year

OMG… I recieved Chancellor’s Scholarship in the amount of $7,000.

I never knew international students can get this large amount of money!! yay! :)

anyone get in from the waitlist? i already sent in my deposit at uvm but if umass takes me off the waitlist and gives me a decent amount of money (which i doubt) then i’d definitely consider going to umass.

A friend of my son’s got off the waitlist last week and is happily enrolled! Good luck!

I doubt he was waitlisted. UMass begins contacting waitlisted people AFTER May 1 when all the students begin notifying the college of their enrollments - or not. Stated on their website. He’s very lucky. I hope he has a nice experience there.

If he was waitlisted and then accepted early then maybe those of us waitlisted have a better chance of getting in. Perhaps the college didn’t hit their quota for enrollees. Wishful thinking :)

crazynationdj - I just got accepted as a transfer student to umass from uvm - I hope you enjoy Burlington!
