UMass- Amherst Class of 2019 Regular Decision

ik they don’t thats why I was asking for websites where I can get scholarships from

Would any of you guys consider going to UMass Amherst over Purdue for Computer Science?

This wait is unbearable. Any word as to when we’ll know for SURE? I’m OOS california.

Hi
Am an international student and got in last week in CS Honors . Now in a bit of a How would you compare University of Minnesota Twin city to Umass.

@Hnadler1077 - I strongly disagree. UMass is a great school! I am an alum and my son is a freshman. It is on par with a lot of other national public universities

Patriotsman - my son applied regular admission as well - OOS. He applied for mechanical engineering. He emailed and got the same one back that you did. He continues to wait, but is currently deciding between our instate public - UNH & UMaine - Orono. At this point I don’t think we will be hearing back from UMASS at all unfortunately. His stats are somewhat higher than yours, but not by much.

New here. We have also been waiting for Umass for what seems like forever. S applied in Dec. under review on Spire since. S called a week ago and got the same message from admissions that they are going out in batches and spire won’t update until 10 days after letter is sent. We are OOS and every school has come in weeks ago except Umass. Several of the kids at his school got word weeks ago from here. Very frustrating. Our spring break week is next week and had hoped to be able to make some visits. This isn’t a rolling admissions school so the month long batches is a bit much. Every other school set a date and everyone heard at once.

I have to agree with the previous posters. UMass Amherst needed to revise their process. It is too dragged out. The Spire account provides NO additional information since everyone has stated they received notice in the mail first - and then their Spire account changed ~10 days later. What is the point of having a Spire account at all?

Also, I don’t know of ANY school, state or private that gives themselves of luxury of informing applicants well into April! (If you don’t believe me - check last year’s postings on the subject.) This is beyond unacceptable. If UMass Amherst does not have enough staff to process the ## of applications (new records each year), they should change their procedure.

Finally, I wholeheartedly agree with the poster above @BLJ123. My DS applied to Virginia Tech which received the same # of applications as UMass. They informed their applicants that everyone would be notified at the SAME TIME in two rounds, February 20 and March 20th. The applicants could log in at that time to receive their decision. This is by far a better notification system.

Rant over - I will be checking the mailbox like everyone else every day this week. As DS was deferred (arn’t we lucky?) his application was reviewed last.

@BLJ123 & @SQBrit it really takes 10 days to update the SPIRE??? I have been checking every day at 12am b/c they say it is refreshed overnight everyday. I have been waiting since Dec!!! So if the SPIRE takes 10 days days to update, how long will it take snail mail? Anyone know? :-L

@Darksand99. Based on information provided to other posters, a 10 day lag time from receiving notification in the mail to Spire updating in a corresponding fashion is correct. Makes “regular check in” to the Spire portal seem pretty pointless doesn’t it? After my earlier rant, I went a fact finding tour of other message boards to see if UMass Amherst is extreme in this late notification. Turns out UMass is not alone… there are a few straggler colleges: Tufts and UMiami that have not released their decisions yet. Not many though.

It’s different to release late and to string you along for months on end! I hope you get the big envelope today, SQBrit!

Another day with no answers!

@BLJ123 I take it that means you just checked the mailbox? ;

@redpoodles I have seen you at a number of forums. Have you made a decision as to where you want to go?

Not quite–D is still waiting on a decision from one school and financial aid packages from two others…She has already released the schools that didn’t work out for one reason or another, however, so it’s a short list.

@SQBrit Yes I did! So over this whole process. We have another S who needs to visit Vtech and only so many days to do it…unless a miracle happens on Ivy day, in which case that one will be a done deal  Add to that this S and we need to choose to visit West or East…if Umass would ever give us an answer! Too many places to go and not enough time left to do it, which is another reason this long wait is frustrating. These ‘late’ answers do not give families enough time to make choices if visits need to be made, time taken off from work to visit and all before May 1st. Uggh!

My D did EA and has been deferred to RD. Today the website status changed to “Under Review”. Really hoping she gets in so we can consider UMass-Amherst against the other higher priced OOS schools. Thank you to all for your contributions. I read many of them. Very helpful.

@redpoodles Which schools are under consideration? Is your daughter completely ruling out her waitlist schools? I’m unsure if my son wants to make an effort at the schools he was waitlisted at.

My S is RD and his spire has said “under Review” since the end of December when he applied. Although I did see on last years thread that kids were accepted well into April, I am becoming discouraged. Umass was suppose to be a match school…the ones we aren’t suppose to worry too much about. But with the insane amount of apps to these schools I’m wishing we had applied to a few more safe bets. I have 2 kids in this mess this year and the results have been discouraging to say the least. Between the waiting and waitlisting I don’t think I can stand it much longer. Sadly, the few from our school that were notified in the first wave from Umass, with acceptances, have no plans to attend and have chosen other schools so those spots will remain not available until after May 1st since none have let Umass know they won’t be accepting the offers.

Has anyone called or emailed to find out whats going on?
