UMass- Amherst Class of 2019 Regular Decision

@Rebecca1212 - We are all sorry. Thankfully we are not alone. So is your DS from NH or Maine? What are their Mech Eng. programs like? I’ve heard Mass Amherst has a decent Eng. dept. but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra $$.

@SQBrit - We are in NH. The engineering programs are all rather similar I think.

Best engineering ranking is as follows:

59 UMass Amherst

127 UMaine

135 UNH

Best National Universities:

76 UMass Amherst

99 UNH

173 UMaine Orono

He got into UConn but it’s too much money. Waitlisted at Northeastern, but we now know it too would be too much money. UNH & UMaine come out about the same cost with scholarships included. UNH is VERY close to home (half hour away), so that has pluses and minuses. Orono, Maine is very remote, but his dad’s whole family went there. A UMass acceptance would give my S one more school in a decent price range (hopefully) to choose from. He would need a scholarship to offset out of state costs though and at this point I find that highly unlikely. I think UMass Amherst does indeed have a better engineering program, but S will do well wherever he lands. He is more interested in extracurriculars like band & fencing than his education (typical teenager!), but I understand. He wants to have fun while at school & he should. All 3 schools have marching bands & great fencing teams!

Oh gosh! I came to check how you guys are doing and still no answers! I feel so bad for you! This is really way too long to wait.

How long after my application changes to “under review” should I expect my decision to come in? How long did yours take?

@OldLions - still waiting 8 days later…

@Rebecca1212 - you know you might get a regional college transfer discount to UConn if he pursues biomedical engineering. That’s what my DS applied for and for MA residents that major at UConn would be in the mid 30K for OOS tuition. Hmm, yes I see the issue. Logic recommends an in state choice but I can certainly see why you are holding out for UMass. We would do the same in your shoes.

My DS thinks stupid Ultimate Frisbee is waaaaayyyyy more important than anything else right now. Last year, we had an almighty battle over studying for an AP exam or attending a stupid Ultimate Frisbee weekend tournament. As you can see, I find it hard to separate the words “stupid” and “frisbee” in my mind, lol.

@redpoodles thank you. I’m hoping to hear by Easter, I-)

I have been “under review” since late January, is this normal or should I call to make sure my application is complete?

^ Same for me and im in state…

My daughter had an awful time waiting for her acceptance. Her twin was accepted quickly… with lower stats but different majors! She was accepted to all the Flagship in the Northeast and some selective privates…yet nothing from U mass until sometime in April. Accepted in Engineering but my daughter rejected them .

@Greenman57‌ Stats don’t mean anything in terms of reputation ask any employer and umass is a joke compared to penn state.

I come from Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh are. In Pa. Penn State is a joke, UMass is highly regarded.

For those that have been accepted… was your financial aid award included in the acceptance envelope?

Sorry if this was already mentioned, but how much is tuition for an international student? I got a $12.000 scholarship but this seemps hardly enough. Are there merit scholarships for honor students or something?

@droftsew No It was not included. What was include was an acceptance letter, a scholarship, and a book

@rickyp Thanks! So has your spire been updated with Financial Aid Award info? Wondering how us late accepted (hopefully!) students will view Financial Aid offer.

@Zackcase. OOS was $39,000 including Room & Board. 12k is highest they give last time I checked and International students do not receive aid…So you would need to pay 27k each year. You can look for outside scholarships!

@Droftsew No I got an acceptance letter via snail mail and it takes 10 days from the day the letter was written to update Spire. Mine was dated March 27! So my spire won’t be updated till April 6th! I sent an email requesting for my to do list to speed up the process so hopefully when I do log into spire it will have my financial aid offer. I was in the same boat as you guys monday! I even sent an email requesting the to do list and they replied that you have to be accepted first, next day when I got accepted I sent them an email ( still waiting on a reply ). My Spire still is “under review.”

@rickyp Yikes

@RickyP what day did your letter arive via snail mail since your letter was dated March 27 because I’m still waiting on mine and its April 02 :expressionless:
