umass amherst or uvm?

I really like both schools and am still undecided on my major. I'm OOS and my parent's don't want me basing the decision off of money (they actually seem to be pushing for uvm), but i'm having a hard time choosing between the two. any advice?

Have you visited both? Which did you like the best?

Do you like outdoors activities? Winter sports?

Which is closer to where you live? Long drives can get tedious pretty quickly, and I don’t think either has great air access.

UMass is only about 45 minutes from Bradley International in Connecticut.

Sure, if you have a car. A shuttle will likely take quite a bit longer unless they go to UMass first. Plus it adds a lot of expense to the trip. I don’t know if it is possible to take public transportation, since you have to cross a state line.

UVM and UMass Amherst are about 3 hours apart. That extra 3 hours can make the difference between a reasonable drive and a lousy drive.

I’ve visited both twice and I really like them equally. Umass is about 4 hours and uvm is around 5, so the distance isn’t really a deciding factor for me. And I do like outdoor activities, but I’m not a skier/snowboarder, which obviously is a big thing at vermont.

I was an exchange student for a year at UMass back in 81 (exchanging from U of D). I absolutely loved it there; I did not want to return to U of D but had to in order to graduate on time. I know a lot has changed…but when my D was looking at colleges last year Univ of Maryland was her 2nd choice. Pitt was her 1st choice and that is where she is. We did visit Maryland twice and it was wonderful. When all is said and done if money is not an issue I would choose Univ of Maryland for any major. I can’t image someone not being happy there. Good Luck.
