Hi! I was recently accepted into UMass as a communications major. I know I want to focus on public relations and after attending the open house it seems like most of their communications classes are more geared towards media production.
I’m wondering if UMass has any programs for public relations students or if I should try to transfer into a marketing major instead. Any responses would be helpful!
My daughter also wants PR and applied as a marketing major through Eisenberg (and has been accepted). My niece’s experience was similar - started in communications and then transferred to marketing and is working in advertising after graduating last year. In looking at the actual course selections for communications majors my daughter decided to go to marketing instead.
@bostonmama thank you! I’m considering doing a double major with communications and marketing but i’m not sure about how much of a difference the workload would be
My niece tried doing the double major a few years ago and couldn’t get everything in and still graduate in 4 years, so she ended up with just marketing major and enough classes for a concentration in communications. As I recall, at least one of the communications classes that she would need to double major was full, and then was not offered the second semester. I have heard of other UMass students having issues with getting shut out of classes which is something that concerns me a little bit.
