I'm currently filling out the UMD application and it's requesting my information on whether or not I have filed taxes, and things of that nature. If you check "No" (such as me), then it requests an explanation. Am I doing this wrong, or should I just type "I don;t make an income" into the box and move on? I already put in my mother's information before, so I'm fairly certain it's requesting mine...

That’s what my D did last year on her application. She just wrote “No income”. She is a freshman at UMD now.

Awesome, thank you!

I called them once and asked about that and they said it is talking about your household income. I doubt it is talking about you, yourself. Otherwise, they wouldn’t ask if you’re financially dependent.

The first section is household income. The second question is under the applicant section. D answered. No income/Dependent on Parents.

@4CookieMonster @SoofDad @maryversity Do you think it will affect my decision if I put Yes on this section? Even though I haven’t worked or made any income? I thought it was for my parents. I dont know how this will play out. Help?

No, I don’t think so. I think that part of the application isconfusing. If there is an issue, they would probably follow-up to make sure you are in state. I’m sure you aren’t the only one that put yes. I asked about that question before my D submitted her app.

@4CookieMonster Oh ok so I shouldn’t worry about it right… because isn’t it kinda like lying? but it was a mistake so I hope they dont consider that.

@terpmom7 any insight??

@Prodigee , honestly I don’t remember this part from when my daughter applied. It sounds like they are probably talking about you if there is another section for your parents. I can’t imagine that this would be a problem for you if you explain your error to them… If indeed you made an error. Call tomorrow and get a firm answer on this and explain why you filled it out like you did. Do it in the morning so that you can relax and enjoy your weekend then. Good luck Prodigee!

@terpmom7 I’ve emailed them last week and they still haven’t replied. I called back and they said to just email. Do you think I should just wait even more? Cant really do anything at this point. Do you think its a big deal that will affect my decision? Really don’t wanna get rejected as this is my #1 choice bc I’m in state.

@Prodigee I really don’t think it will hurt your chances for admission. Did you email your county rep or just admissions office? I would try emailing your county rep.
I understand why you’re worried, but I really think you’ll be fine. After all this seems like a simple mistake and has nothing to do with your academic qualifications that will be used for admission purposes.

@terpmom7 i emailed my county rep, and thanks very much!

No problem @Prodigee. Best of luck to you!!!

@terpmom7 @4CookieMonster @Spongerman to let u guys know, i called to make sure, and they said if your parents claim you, everything about tax should be about the parents. It should only be about you if you are financially independent.
