UMD College Park class of 2022 EA discussion

how is pre-med at umd?

How will we find out about possible merit awards? (My D18 is in the Honors College.)

We are looking forward to getting a big envelope in the snail mail to make it feel more real!

UMD mails scholarship decisions. and/or B/K invites.

Thanks. So she’ll get her big decision envelope, and any other envelopes that come her way with additional good news will be “gravy”!

Does anyone know if enrolling earlier really reduces your chances of being put in a triple? I’m 99% going to UMD but still holding out hope for a couple of elite reaches. Of course, there’s almost no chance I get in and an even lower chance that it’s worth the money if I do, so I’m fine with committing to UMD now if it improves my housing situation for next year. I already filled out the housing agreement.

Does anyone know when B/K emails regarding consideration/interviews are sent out? Thanks!

@Laerai you can fill out your housing form without committing to UMD. If you decide not to enroll you have to email them by 7/1 to let them know. There are no fees involved unless you fail to notify them by 7/1 that u won’t be going.

My S received an email response yesterday (2/1) that B/K nominees would be notified by email and snail mail by “mid-February”. Just reviewing prior year discussions, it seems that the notifications were around the first week of Feb.

Anyone on this thread who is waiting for the music school to allow the release of regular school & music school decisions, heard back yet? My D has not. But on another thread it sounded like someone with an instrument performance minor has heard back already. It’s nerve wracking.

@grndad, was your son’s “email response” about B/K a reply to a question he asked, or an unsolicited email from UMD?

I was reading comments posted to this thread in the last few days and just thought I’d contribute my experience in response to the question @MrazFan100 raised about potential merit scholarships for kids who weren’t offered Honors or Scholars. I know @maryversity already responded that merit scholarships are awarded independently of the Honors / Scholars decisions, but just thought I’d provide evidence based on what happened with my older children in case anyone is doubting whether they could still realistically receive a merit scholarship if denied Honors/Scholars. Our son (Class of '18) had very strong scores yet was not accepted to Honors or Scholars, but received a large merit scholarship (almost full tuition). Our daughter (Class of '19) was accepted into Honors with higher grades / lower scores but was offered about $2,000 less per year. Please note this is completely separate from Financial Aid as we didn’t apply for either child.

I should add that we’re in state - no idea how being OOS impacts merit scholarships.

Can anyone tell me what College Park Scholars is?

Also, my son applied to the School of music and has not received any information yet, however he did receive a letter of acceptance today from the general admissions office. Has anyone who applied to the School of Music received any information from them yet?

@pickledginger He sent them an email asking about the timing is b/k notifications. Their response was “mid-February”.

Just wanted to let those of you who applied to the school of Music, if you have not heard yet, you should be receive an email soon as my son was notified at &:15 via email.

I have a question about applying for housing before committing to UMCP and paying the deposit. If our DD was accepted into college park scholars and completed her program preference form, is there a need to apply for housing now since the scholars programs are connected to specific dorms? She thought her housing assignment would be based on her scholars assignment. We don’t want to wait if she should book housing now, though, since she’s pretty sure she’ll go to UMCP. Thanks for any guidance on this!

@lifegarding we had the same question! My D18 picked her preferred Honors program, but we didn’t know if we should sign up for housing now. We did sign up as she is pretty set on attending (and excited!) but is just not quite ready to make it formal.

The Housing form lets UMD Reslife know that your Student wants to live on campus as opposed to commuting or living nearby off campus. I think the housing form also includes a meal plan selection. The actual dorm assignment will be based on the LLC.
