I have been trolling this Maryland forum for the past 3 weeks and have seen nothing about Merit Aid ! When does U of Maryland actually issue merit aid for both in state and OOS .I understand there have been forums concerning Honors etc. but my question is approximately what time of calendar year are students notified about merit, grants etc. As a parent of an admitted student I would like to know if there is any in order to move on and have an idea on what schools may be financially fitting. In other words how much does Maryland allocate and when do you hear of these scholarships . Many of the other schools have posted there $$$$ merit aid.
Here is some info. My D didn’t get any merit aid last year, so I have no direct knowledge of the dates.
Most likely in the beginning of March…notification is by snail mail
We were notified of an unexpected (and unexpectedly generous!) departmental scholarship at the end of March (by snail mail, as @maryversity said). So it can be worth it to wait it out, maybe even into the beginning of April, before “moving on”. Especially since you have until May 1 to confirm enrollment at a given school.
Below is from UMD rep early Feb:
“We are in the process of reviewing for Merit Scholarships now, and are planning to release notifications by the end of this month.”
A message on the undergrad admissions line this morning states by mid March merit scholarship decisions will be released. I was told a couple weeks ago by an admissions counselor they were hoping to release them by the third or fourth week of February.
Thank you @amaame
Today’s mail brought a letter informing my son of a Presidential Scholarship! We’re in-state and live 15 miles from campus. Good luck to all who are watching their mailboxes.
@Putterer congratulations! I’m very happy for your son!
Thanks @terpmom7 for your good wishes and for all your very helpful advice.
Congrats…can you let me know if that scholarship is listed on your UMD portal somewhere? or is it only through regular mail?
@collegenj, Thanks. No, I don’t see the scholarship on his UMD portal. Only communication was by regular mail.
If those who receive merit could post stats that would be super helpful/appreciated! Congrats to all those who have already received notices!
DS was offered Presidential, $8K/year for 4 years. 4.0 uw/4.7 w GPA. 1560/2300 SAT one sitting. About a dozen APs, 2 dual credit math classes. National Merit Semi-Finalist (now Finalist). He’s in-state and was accepted into Smith and Honors. We’ll be attending Admitted Students Day this Friday.
@Putterer - Impressive stat! Congrats to your S.
@FromMD, thanks and good look to your D.
@Putterer - Just curious but, with stats like that, why do you think he didn’t get B/K invite?
@FromMD, my son and I were surprised he didn’t get a B/K invite. His essays and recommendations were strong, so the only thing I can think of is that they were looking for more leadership in his ECs.
In the mail today, my son was offered Presidential Scholarship $20,000 (equally distributed over 4 years). His stats : full IB candiate, OOS, GPA 3.4 UW/3.9 W , 31 ACT.
@fallschurchmom, Congratulations to you and your son!
