Congratulations to your son on his excellent choices/acceptances!
We are in-state (MD) and had visits scheduled this month for both University Park and University of South Carolina/Honors College. We cancelled them both today.
Will make it very interesting if your son (hopefully) becomes a Terp - your DH will have to choose wisely who to root for ! #goterps
At the last Banneker Key luncheon before COVID hit (early 2020), all of the B/K finalists received their honors college placement on the day of their interview. There were many students who did not get their first choice. Maybe itās to avoid having some honors college programs full of B/K people? I have no idea exactly why, but B/K finalist do not automatically get their first choice.
I am wondering if what the kids write on their preference forms plays into placement. Diversity of majors, race, gender, etc. could play a role. Just guessing here. I doubt getting a scholarship plays any role.
I heard gemstone always has lot of applicants, so itās possible that students are being distributed across honors programs. As I understand, undergrad research is very important to get admitted to masters programs in the top schools, so would have to look for research opportunities outside of Gemstone.
IBH is new and the program looks very interesting.
It is true that some Honors Programs have a limited capacity. I know that ACES does.
However, research opportunities are not limited to the 8 Honors Programs. Departmental Honors Programs (to which all students may apply) can also be a source of research opportunities.
There are probably even more research opportunities than those.
This is all so encouraging. DD was not jazzed about UMD (itās too close to home for her), but she is excited about getting into HoHum (her first choice). She has signed up for the online welcome session. We havenāt heard about tours, and the calendar seems to have a lot of various departments sessions, but I havenāt seen anything for music or theatre. Does anyone know if there are tours for theatre or music?
If your daughter is interested in musical theatre at all, sheāll want to follow @32barsumd on Instagram. Itās a student-run musical theatre group and will have a production of Heathers this spring. I donāt know much about the Theatre and Music majors at UMD except that The Clarice is a lovely performing arts space. The Music Department seems very large, but the Theatre major has a smaller population. I personally think that HoHum has the best dorm on campus, despite what the ACES people say!
Yes, we have heard great things about Hohum! hanks for the MT info! Her violin teacher is a strings professor at UMD, so we are well acquainted w/ Clarice Smith. Fabulous venue. She applied for music because it was the harder admit but is hoping to double major.
Wanted to share this information from the Virtual Admitted Student program we attended on Friday 3/4 - from James Massey, Director of Undergraduate Admissions:
*The incoming Freshman class is āthe most talented in the 166 year historyā of UMD College Park.
*55,000 applications for a class of 4500 students.
*Average SAT 1390-1530.
*Average ACT 32-35
*Average GPA 4.45
Impressive stats. But no, acceptance rate canāt be 8% (it was around 50% last year).
We donāt have figures for this year but I believe last year, the incoming class size was about 4,600 and yield rate was about 25%. That means they would have sent out 18,400 acceptances - which comes out a 33.5% acceptance rate.
Of course, this isnāt fully accurate because we donāt know the class size this year or the predicted yield rate. And RD is still pending (although itās a small size for UMD - about 5%). But 33.5% is probably in the ballpark.
@DadOfJerseyGirl I think that makes sense and sounds right ā¦ as he did not give an acceptance rate ājust # of applications and incoming class size as a way of indicating the competitiveness of this application cycle.
My son was accepted to the Clark School of Engineering. We are from out-of-state and plan to visit in early April. We are looking at housing options and wondering if anyone is familiar with the Virtus: Men in Engineeeing Living and Learning program?
