UMiami Admissions Fall 2022

Thank you so much!

Weā€™re in the same boat. Miami is so high on my sonā€™s listā€¦.his guidance counselor was quite surprised about the deferral too. Fingers crossed for RD!

Good luck to him!

She applied early action. So we heard several weeks ago? Just now starting to plan a visit.

Can we put down a housing deposit now without committing yet to the university? Does it work like the earlier you register for housing, the better?

Congratulations on your acceptance to The U! You have to pay your commitment deposit before you can actively enter the housing site. Obviously the sooner the better. Iā€™m working on getting answers to straight forward housing questions prior to making the commitment. We were accepted into the Spring Semester which creates additional challenges for on campus housing.

I think that everyone needs to continue to put pressure on UM with this issue. It is concerning knowing that our students likely may have housing as upperclassmen. I think itā€™s wise for us all to be bringing this up at all of their virtual sessions and push for some alternatives. For example, why can they not create a contract with Thesis until the time that the new housing is complete to offer spaces to those who are still in need. Forcing students to find housing in one of the most expensive US cities is worrisome for many. It is our #1 concern about the school. We feel great about everything elseā€¦just somewhat worried about housing after Freshman year. It would be easier to commit if this was not a projected problem. Iā€™m going to ask next week during the virtual session as a housing rep is supposed to be there. Of course, we have asked in the past, and it seems to get ā€œbreezedā€ past

Hi. In same boat. Son admitted Spring 2023 through ED2. Would love to know more about how your figuring out the housing situation. Thanks.

Our decision will come down to getting honest and helpful advice on the current on campus housing situation at Miami from several different people in the Admissions Office and someone from Housing and Resident Life. Here are the important questions for us:
a. What happened in the current Spring Semester with so many being place off campus?
b. What percent of the Spring starters were placed off campus and how many were since relocated? Supposedly half of the students originally place in the Thesis Hotel were recently relocated.
c. With Hecht going off line, how will the situation be resolved/improved for upcoming Spring Starters?
d. Will we be guaranteed on campus housing?
e. If not, where will he be placed and how will cost be determined?

The other challenge is getting my son to focus more time towards getting excited about his awesome #2 college. Right now heā€™s all in on Miami!

a) they had too many spring admits commit
b) most were placed off campus based on what was posted on the Spring admitFB pages. Many have been placed on campus now and are in dorms ( the did convert study rooms to dorms as well). They plan to move others soon.
c) not sure on solution. =
d) *. This is a great question for a spring admit. Housing is assigned by the date you pay enrollement and housing/meal plan deposit. They use that order for ALL years ( and also require certain credit hours to get housing year 2-4). Spring admits who got on campus late this year will not be allowed on campus next year (due to credit hours) and are considered sophomores in the fall.
E) If you are receiving financial aid (not merit) this off campus costs is an EXCELLENT question. My daughter is a fall 22 admit and I worry about this exact thing for sophomore year if she cannot get on campus, even though she filled out everything on the very first da possible.

The Biltmore is beautiful, really close - and they give discounts to U families.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! When you say Spring Admits wonā€™t be allowed on campus does that mean they wonā€™t be considered Freshmen any longer or will they be allowed to participate in the Sophomore priority order at the very bottom?

I put in a request for housing policies & procedures.

It is my understanding the second -fouth year housing is based on when they initially signed the housing contract/ meal plan freshman year and have completed a certain number of credit hours. Then they are assigned a time to log in to try and get housing. Earlier you applied freshman year, earlier your time. It is also my understanding that spring admits cannot get on campus housing past that first semester as they donā€™t have the completed credit
hours. Do not quote me on thisā€¦definitely check with the school

I got an answer from housing and it is not based on that date of the first check. They claim that is more of a ā€œtie breakerā€. Hereā€™s the copy/pasted email I got.

ā€œI apologize we the delayed response. We are actually in the midst of the sign up process as we speak for next year. Our process has put value on giving priority to students who are part of roommate groups who can fill ā€˜wholeā€™ units first. Reason for this is that satisfaction has a lot to do with who they can live with. During certain processes, we give priority based on current classification. Since our Lakeside Village community housing predominantly Sophomores, the current freshmen would have an earlier selection time over rising Juniors or Seniors since those Juniors and Seniors are eligible for our other apartment community, University Village but they are not. As such, roommate groups of 4 that can fill a whole apartment or suite designed for 4 people would go ahead of those who are a part of a group or 3, 2 or 1 would. Those other groups would get higher priority during the unit types that would entail them being able to fill the full unit of their respective size. We do not use academic/scholastic achievement as a measure in our process whatsoever. We do in cases where a ā€˜tie breakerā€™ would be needed between 2 applicants on whose application might receive an earlier appointment time slot use the original date they applied for housing. Hope that helps better characterize the process we have in place. If you have further questions please donā€™t hesitate to reach out. Happy to also hop on a call with you if I can be of any other help in assisting with the decision making on attending the U, especially as it pertains to housingā€.

So I was wrongā€¦only University village requires a credit limitā€¦disregard!!!

Do you mean, as a tie breaker, you use the original date and time of when they applied for housing as a freshman, or as a sophomore?

Everyone should definitely make a point of bringing up the lack of on-campus housing issue at their virtual sessions. There will be housing people on there and I think if more parents express concern that it might be a deal breaker for them the school will act. There is no reason they canā€™t make a contract with Thesis as you suggested since they are currently doing that for the spring admits. Rentals in the area are not all near campus and quite expensive. Iā€™m

the ORIGINAL date of housing payment, so what you pay prior to them arriving for Freshman year.

Does anyone know when deferred applicants will receive their decision?
