Thanks for any comments!

One thing you can do is apply early. It definitely improves your chances.

I've railed against the popular adage that you're doomed if you apply after October-November, because that's simply not true. But earlier is better, no doubt about that.

Michigan is a reach for you, if you are applying to the school of Engineering and a match if you are applying tot he school of LSA. Be sure to apply BEFORE October in order to maximize your chances.

oh boy... Did Michigan upped it's standards?

That stat look better than when I applied.. :P

Undefinex, Michigan Engineering has always been more selective than LSA.

what if i am top 10% with say, a 2000 SAT?

your gpa and class rank are a little low for an out of stater

ndnzn, you are a match. Apply in September if possible.

I have a 1310/1600, 5 AP's, 4.43/4.6=A GPA, top 10%, lots of EC's. member of Medical Sciences program at high school (its a 4 year thing, very competitive)

I got waitlisted and they didn't take anyone as, in 0/1400, in 2004.

I really wanted to go to umich.

I guess it was a match for me. So chances are, if its a reach for you, then its really slim, and my guidance counselor, told me it'll only get harder to get into great colleges that are becoming much more selective.

Go for at least 5 matches.

My mistake was 5 reaches, 1 match, 2 safeties. In a year such as 2004, it would have been easy to get into at least 3/5 of my reaches, but it'll only get harder.

are you out of state wangster?

i think you should be fine

engineering school is more selective than LSA? my friend w/ 1280 sat, 3.6 gpa, mediocre ECs awards no hook got in, another one w/ better everything got rejected by LSA, both out-of-state

by the way, the first one got in the engineering school

Thom, I know students with sub-1300 on their SATs that got into MIT, Stanford, CalTech, Harvard, Yale, Princeton etc... it does not mean that a student with a sub 1300 on the SAT has a good chance of getting into any of those schools. You are exposed to a handful of students. Your friend may have had extenuating circumstances you are not aware of. And by the way, Michigan does not really care about ECs. Why should they? Michigan has future NFL, MBA, NHL and MLB all-stars, Olympic level swimmers and tracksters, World-famous actors and performers etc... When you have 5,000+ gifted students come into your campus annually, you do not really need to look out for ECs.

you're so horrible Alexandre.

All the hours i've spent on EC's were a complete waste????

i've wasted half my life.

If you only did your EC's just for your college app...then yes, you have wasted half your life if you look at it in those terms.

they dont care about ECs? OUCH! i still think ECs should be very important, u can't deny it.

i'm gonna spread the news, this is some BIG news. my fellow underclassmen dont need to stress about how few ECs they have anymore... :)

whatsup everybody,

Now that the year is over and that I know about the Michigan GPA, I'd like to know my chances. My Michigan GPA is a 3.6 - out of the 10 classes that are used in calculating the GPA, 3 are AP, 3 are Honors, and 2 are foreign language. My overall GPA is 3.73UW and 3.77 weighted. I'm pretty sure on the second taking of the SAT I can hit a 1980 or around that level. In addition to the stats from the original post, I now have 500 hours and hold down the shift chairman position. I am hoping since I don't have very many ECs that the volunteering shows dedication and is an example of leadership skills. I'd like to know my chances for Engineering and LSA.

Thanks

u wanna hit a 2000+ or 28+ ACT man or maybe higher if ur out of state..everything else seems perfectly fine

If you can break the 2000 on the SAT, Michigan would be a match. As it stands, I would say Michigan is a match/reach.
