umich gpa and best time to apply

how do they calculate the umich gpa? i know no credit for ap/honors, but do business and elective classes count?

what is average umich gpa?

also is early to mid spetember still considred early?

another question, on the app it says to send in a rec from an academic teacher, so i am going to, but my accounting teacher would write me a really good one and i also spent time with him in clubs and stuff outside of the classroom. is it bad to have extras? i also want to get some from people who i workd for in internships, which i know would be really good. so basically i would be sending in 5 recs plus the consuler. is that two many?

its "too" many, yes

The "Michigan GPA" is measured as follows:

1) Only core classes (Math, English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Foreign Languages, History, Economics, Psychology and Music) taken during your Sophomore and Junior years. Freshman year is not included in the Michigan GPA.

2) +s and -s aren't counted. In other words:
A+, A and A- = 4.0
B+, B and B- = 3.0
C+, C and C- = 2.0
D+, D and D- = 1.0

3) No additional weight is given for AP or Honors classes. The Michigan GPA is unweighed.

The average Michigan GPA of students enrolling is roughly 3.8. It fluctuates between 3.75 and 3.85 and the majority of students who are admitted have Michigan GPAs well over 3.5.

5 Recs is indeed too many. I believe Michigan asks for just 2.

Applying in September is definitely still considered early. It starts getting late in November.

music counts towards michigan GPA? really? then mine was a bit higher than i thought

I think Music counts. I may be wrong though.

on recs, who do you get it addressed to if its by someone other than a teacher. "to whom it may concern" or should i call and try and find a specific person?

Well, you are only supposed to have a rec from an academic teacher and a rec from a counselor....

and alex, i found this:
Freshmen: No extra (GPA) weight is given to Honors, Accelerated, or Advanced Placement courses; however, the difficulty of a student's curriculum is taken into consideration within the admission's process. Additionally, only academic courses from 10th and 11th grade (Foreign Language, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and English) are used to calculate the GPA.

so i dont think music counts

That's too bad.

Hey Hauckt and Alexandre, do you guys know how UM calculates GPA of IB students? If they take into consideration that your curriculum is harder that's already good news. However, when my sister applied there, she had a 4.0 (she also took IB and had 7 in almost every class) and then UM knocked it down to a 3.6 b/c "she is a foreign student" so they said. Seemed kinda unfair to me.

Wow, thats terrible. There are kids at our HS w/ unweighted 3.8 and 3.9 who could never get through the honors classes, esp math and science. I guess they're in at UM.

Does anyone know if UM reviews and compares the quality of the high schools when they do this? Or is a 3.6 a 3.6 is a 3.6, no matter which HS you attended ?

UMich does unweight grades and create their own 4.0 assesment of each student. That being said, there are a couple factors that they consider that are below the surface GPA. First, only the 10th and 11th grade years are considered in admission. Since students apply with rolling admissions, they can't consider 12th grade because students aren't applying at consistant times. Second, they consider honors and APs when looking at grades. If a kid has a 3.5 and took all honors/ap classes vs. a kid who took cheffery 1,2, and 3, obviously they will go with the lower GPA, because of a higher academic integrity. The best time to apply to UMich is right now. As it gets later in the admissions season, the standards for admission skyrocket, especially for Out of state candidates.

Their website says they will start looking at applications late october. So I guess apply by then.

if you send the apps in now, you'll be one of the firsts to be considered.

When you say send the app now, would that include teacher recs/transcript?

They tell you on the tours to shoot for applying by Halloween, so I'm guessing they get a ton of applications around that time.

I guess I will send in my application as soon as possible. I'll just have to wait til school starts to ask some teachers for recommendations. The Michigan application shouldn't be too tough; I don't think they have a large Common App supplement like a lot of private schools.

Well the problem is even though I can apply early I want to raise my SAT scores. And the earliest opportunity comes in October, but I wanted to get my application in earlier...and Umich (i think every college anyway) doesnt start considering you until everything's in. T_T for me
