UMich Honors Program questions

I was recently accepted to UMich as an instate student. Today I received an email inviting me to apply to the honors program. I have a few questions:
-does everyone get this email?
-how competitive are admissions to it? (sat and GPA ranges were said to be ivy caliber but mine line up)
-what are the perks? Should I put in the effort?

Any help guys?

you receive an invite if your CR and Math SAT are at least 1500.

That being said the most important part of the app is the essay. I know people who were invited and not accepted and some (my d) who were not invited but applied and got accepted. Each year about 500 students accepted into the program.

Thanks! I have a killer essay that I want to use, and I think that they will enjoy it. If I am accepted, what are the benefits of honors vs non honors?

If you receive an email, the chances of being accepted to the honors program are high as long as you apply quickly (as it’s on a first-come, first served basis).

Check out the LSA Honors faq’s on the UM website. You can find answers to most of your questions there. My daughter was in this program and loved it.

from everything i read on CC about honors program it seems one of the big perks is housing,
being on south quad which is a great location

Thanks for the help guys. RedSeven said to apply quickly because it is first come first served. Am I too late if I apply in the next couple days? (I did receive my acceptance rather late and many others probably got it earlier)

I applied Jan. 25th and emailed in the Honors Office. They still haven’t looked at my application and apparently haven’t looked at a number of applications earlier than mine.
Thus, they are in a mess like their regular decision counterparts, so I don’t think your timing matters.

Just bitter^^

^Really? That’s pretty lame. If you applied that early, you DESERVE a decision by now. I applied February 27th and got a decision in a week…and I didn’t even get invited…

I am in the same boat as you zinthafan. I mailed mine around the same date and emailed them like a month later to make sure they got it, and got a generic response about how they will email me when they have a decision… argh.

Volleyballplayer, I thought I had a very strong application.
But is this no response an automatic rejection?..:0

I’m not sure, I just want a decision soon though, acceptance or otherwise.

My S and I visited UMich last week for Campus Days. We went to the Honors discussion since he’s already been accepted into the program. They said they are processing honors applications and still sending out decisions in batches. They also said they still have spaces, but that it’s best to get applications in as soon as possible. They want to have about 500 kids in the program.

If you like knowing “why” not just “how,” having intellectual discussions, and being with other people who have a strong intellectual curiosity, I highly recommend this program. It’s not about being harder. It seems like it’s about offering choices that are more interesting, more in depth, and better suited to this type of learner. Good luck!
