UMKC 6-Year BA/MD, Class of 2013!!

I thought I would start this thread for all the accepted students into the University of Missouri-Kansas City 6 Year BA/MD Program. I'm from New York, and I found out today that I was accepted.

To the others that were as lucky as me, I hope to see you all in Missouri by September. To the ones that weren't lucky, Good luck. Im sure you will be a doctor some other way.

To the accepted students or enrolled students, are we obligated to stay in the dorms for a certain amount of time. If not, are the apartments in Missouri, near the school, cheap? I am guessing they are, considering its not the most populated city in the US.

If we are obligated, has anyone seen the dorms. The kids who were there at my orientation said the new dorms are bearable, but I don't know if I agree with them on the definition of "bearable."

Hope to see you all soon!!

you have to stay in the dorms till yr 2. they are very bearable....if you look at cherry street, the other dorms, you will appreciate oak st. it's not bad at all...lots of space..at least for me. just hope you get a good roommate. i'm glad i did. congrats on getting in

How many people share a bathroom? And one more question, the student (male) who gave me the tour on my interview said his dad was a VP of Boeing, and he drives three 6-digit cars, and that he got residency offers from WashU, Mayo Clinic, and Johns Hopkins. I didnt believe him then and still don't. And he said there is a girl in the program whos dad owned National Petroleum...Hard to believe there are resident millionaires and billionaires at UMKC. Is any of this true?

4 people share a bathroom, two ppl share a room.

and yes, it's true. there are plenty of ppl who get into great residencies from this program. and i think i know who you are talking about, as he is a really good friend on mine.

MadFr0g, I had a couple of questions:-

I see from the Housing Rates page on the UMKC web site, there's

Oak Street Single Room(Private Bath) & Oak Street 2-Person Single Suite (Shared Bath).

So a 2 person room would share 1 bath or there are 4 people in one suite sharing 1 bath ? I guess there are only a few single rooms with bath.
Do we have to apply early to get rooms in Oak Street ?

And there's these options for Meal Plans -
Meal Plan 1 - 19 meals per week/$150 flex cash
Would this be the convenient one ?

Thanks

well i believe you have your own bathroom in a single. 4 ppl share a bathroom and that's a suite. the bathroom connects two rooms, each shared by two ppl.

the meal plan i have is the block one. i believe it's 360 meals per year. that's better bc with that you can use up meals whenever and also bring non-umkc ppl to eat too. with the 19 meals/week you only get 19 per week, and lose them if you don't use them.

i thought that the med students in their first year were placed in the dorms. I didnt think there was a choice. How does all that work?

Thanks MadFr0g.

Which degree do most people take ? Liberal Arts or B.A Biology. I would like to take Bio but would it mean a longer time to finish (7years)?
Any advise on studying in the summer for a particular subject ? Is Organic Chem the most difficult course in Year 1 or is it better to study for something else?

satkid11- can you provide the link to the housing and meal options.

and I have to say I have the same question as theblackmamba...are we obligated to stay in dorms for a certain amount of time...if not, how reasonable are apartments around kansas city...

yes....you have to stay in the dorms till yr 2.

last year, year 1 was the easiest year. this year, it's hell. we have a new orgo teacher, and she's tough as hell. you don't have to study anything....just be caught up in class when you're taught ur stuff. relax guys...you don't have to stress out about classes already haha.

Here are the rates for housing ....

<a href="http://www.umkc.edu/housing/rates.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.umkc.edu/housing/rates.asp</a></p>

thanks satkid11...

madfrog- hows the social life at UMKC?

Madfrog,
What about people getting non-science Bachelors? I am considering combining my MD with a music major as the UMKC conservatory is top notch...

Btw, y'all should join the facebook group so we can all meet each other!
<a href="http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2277604334%5B/url%5D">http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2277604334</a></p>

most of the ppl get liberal arts degree. non science bachelors is almost impossible without other credit. you're already taking about 22 hrs, they won't let you take anymore. you can try though, not sure.

search for my other posts on social life. it's on one of the umkc forums.

HECK YEAH!!! Got the big envelope today during school (apparently, they mail it to school)...most likely I'll be going here

They send the letters to your school? Because Ive called twice, and they said I was accepted, but I havent received a letter yet. That'll suck if they send to school, Im off until next Tuesday...

yep...kinda strange

Present UMKC students: Do the dorms have a parking structure, or do you have to park on the street? How easy is it to park, and sensible to bring a car with you? Is it safe to park on the street? I want to bring a car with me to Missouri, but I won't if its not safe to park on the street or unneccessary for a car in Kansas city...

I'm not a current student, but during my several visits I picked up the impression that not many students take cars. I know it costs like $90 to get permission to have a car on campus. Around the different buildings there isn't a lot of parking, mostly street. I'm not sure where the parking garage is in relationship to the dorms, but was told the standard 'don't leave valuables in sight, and you'll be fine' speech. Campus security does cover the parking garage. At the med school construction is currently, or will be soon, underway to not only build the nursing and pharm. schools but a new parking garage as well.

MadFr0g ,

Do you have classes on Saturdays as well ? Or do we have the weekend for study/fun ?
