finalchild – There are really only two possibilities. Either CC posters are strongly biased toward the highest scores, or people aren’t telling the truth. My guess is that it’s probably a bit of both. In part, the bias toward high scores among posters may also be because people are more willing to post their scores when they’re at that level.

If you look here, you’ll see that for 2012’s college-bound seniors, a 2200 put a student in the 99th percentile:

arlmom2 - actually you are right. I think we tend to post scores if it is at high level. I was not sure if SAT is superscored in U of M but My S single setting was 2330 and 2380 is his superscore. taking standardized test is easy for him so it was not a surprise for us. The reason every kid who post the SAT score in CC above 2300+ is because they do post their superscore instead of single settings since most of top colleges look at their superscore instead of single setting. It is not true for ACT though so the numbers appear to be little skewed for SAT. This year presidential scholar nominees were 2-3 times more than last year for Michigan so that speaks for itself.

Finalchild "just think how big of a scholarship your S could have snagged if he didn’t have that weakness on SAT scores "

very funny quote. actually as an In-state, that is maximum scholarship we could have expected. For Shipman , one had to have extraordinary talent in something with stellar stats and my son does not fit into that criteria.

I hate to sound egotistical here, but I have several friends who received scholarships sometime ago, and quite honestly I have much more academic merit than they do. I assumed that because they received a 10,000/yr scholarship that I would be receiving a bigger one, although it never happened. Being OOS, there is a 0% chance I go to Michigan unless I receive a scholarship, and now I am worried that I will not get one at all.

I’m in the same situation as Evan. I called the scholarship office and they said they haven’t begun sending out Shipman or any other big ones, so some hope?

Well, that’s good to hear, VBlock. Seems like the people (at least on CC) who have so far received merit for the most part have 36 ACT or 800 on math SAT and most seemed to have been female so far. More to come, hopefully!

Vblock, if you look at this thread closely, Large ones like Shipman and Geisinger have been sent out already, but there are other big ones like Stamps, Bells and Deans merit remaining so good luck to you.
Evan3795 -As OOS, you have great stats so hang in there. Last year, stamps scholarship got sent out during this time which is 20k for OOS. Maybe your name is in one of them.

@Jrkiyer the woman I spoke to suggested that it was absurd to even suggest that Shipman semifinalists had been notified, and believe me, I let her know that I had heard otherwise. I am aware people have received calls about Shipman, but that conflicts with what a Michigan official said…who knows!

Thanks Jrkiyer and VBlock I feel a little more hopeful that there’s still a chance I could also get OOS merit. I’m beginning to feel discouraged but I guess I’ll just keep waiting and hoping.

I got a letter from LSA today. It looked super nice and fancy and before I opened it, I thought it was going to be a scholarship. I ripped through the envelope to find not a scholarship letter but some letter just reminding me how great U-M is. Oh, Michigan, you’re such a tease…

@evan3795, I feel you on that. I’m OOS and I’m hoping for the best and expecting the worst.

My D really needs scholarship. It seems a 35 act 10 AP5’s and unw 4.0 NMF doesn’t get much these days. Should I ask admissions for something they have offered 1.5K total.

VBlock, sorry what I meant was Shipman invite to 40 have been sent out so the semifinalists will be selected among those 40 only. 15 will get full ride and rest will get more than half tuition + LSA scholarships. But others have chance with Bell , Stamps, Bentley, Geisinger and other LSA or engineering merit scholarship which gets sent out till april 1st week or 2nd week if you look at past few years thread. good luck to you again if this is your top choice.

Anyone else just get the invitation to the Amaizin’ Blue Preview overnight program for scholarship students? I assume that this is a result of receiving the Jean Fairfax and not necessarily an indication of any more aid to come from the LSA. I’d love to go but I’m not sure if I can afford the plane ticket there… anyone planning on going?

@tsl496 I think it’s for all scholarship recipients that have been announced so far, it says in the email “Amaizin’ Blue Preview (ABP), a free overnight program for scholarship students, is scheduled for April 11-12, 2013 in Ann Arbor.”
