UM's Merit Scholarships?

coffeeandtea, did you apply to MIT?

coffeeandtea, if money is a concern, shouldn’t you be expecting some financial aid from Stanford? I am told they are pretty generous. It is hard to turn down Stanford, but at full cost, it would be $100k more expensive than Michigan, and if cost is a concern, that is hard to ignore. The Ivy League may not respond until March 30, but honestly, for engineers, other than Princeton, none of them are worth attending over Michigan. And if you applied to MIT, you will hear back from them on March 14. Getting in there will definitely spice things up! ;)

I did not apply to MIT, and while I got some aid at Stanford, Michigan would now be a bit more affordable. The other school I am waiting on is Princeton, which is known for very generous aid. Stanford has been my dream for so long though. I honestly don’t know what is going to happen, I just wish I could hear back from everywhere before I had to decide.

Stanford is hard to pass up. If you were deciding between Michigan and a peer (like NU, Cornell or Penn), the decision would be a no-brainer in favor of Michigan. But Stanford is amazing. Of course, if the difference in cost will be entirely made up of loans, I think you should go to Michigan. But if you have the means, and the difference in cost is merely a inconvenience, I say go for Stanford. Can Michigan top-up your scholarship with an additional one? I know some scholarship start off at $20 k but with the possibility of doubling it to $40k. If you can get one of those, than Michigan can’t be beat!

If a student with a scholarship awarded by Michigan decides to go elsewhere, does that money get “re-rewarded” to another student? Anybody know?

I think the point everyone is missing, which is the only point that I believe coffeeandtea was trying to make, is she deserves to know all of her results before making a final decision. That’s why you apply EA and RD instead of ED. So it’s not about what is the best choice, or whether UMich is just as good or better than other choices. It’s simply that she is entitled to know all of her results.

And btw, if my kid had that profile I want want her to have the benefit of every choice available. Very, very impressive. You are in an ideal, dream-like situation (albeit still difficult).

CoffeeandTea – I have a possible solution for you that can work. My son was in a similar position. We talked to the admin office and went ahead and accepted the award right near the deadline, with the understanding that we would WITHDRAW IMMEDIATELY if another school offered more or if in the end, the finances didn’t make sense.

The only thing you have to make certain is that at NO time are you “deposited” to more than one school. If you do this, you will worst-case scenario be out the $200 deposit – a small price to make sure you’ve fully evaluated all of your options.

So do not worry about deciding in advance. Simply deposit close to the date – and rescind if it turns out you will attend elsewhere.

I’m curious what happens to those scholarships if/when the kids decide to go to other schools? Are they redistributed to other kids, or do they go unused until the next year?

The scholarship deadline isn’t binding - the scholarship office just wants make sure Michigan is still one of your choices.

Scholarships do get re-distributed (which is why they want to know early if you’ve already committed elsewhere).

Shipman!!! My child just got an offer (by phone) to interview in mid March. About 40 will be invited. As many as half could get the scholarship. Sorry I won’t offer up stats or other info since my child really does not like me to do so, but they are similar to maryland13’s. Just thought everyone would like to know that it has begun…

I got the phone call last night. I wasn’t home so it took a message. I called back today and got an offer to attend the Shipman Scholars weekend! (I’m in engineering)

Interesting, in that the person who called first asked me about my interest in UM, my other top schools, and how likely I would be to attend UM if I recieved a scholarship. Afterwards he made the Shipman offer and stressed that they really want to make sure I am likely to attend UM before I accept.

I told him I’ll call back tomorrow. I have good offers at other strong schools and don’t know if a $27,000 COA is worth it.

FYI - All 40 who attend Shipman Scholars weekend get $7500. About 15 to 20 recieve the Shipman Scholarship ($15K + Room and Board (about $10K)).

Does anybody know about the value of the program beyond its explicit financial value?

My S received his LSA Dean’s merit scholarship today $10k per year. He got accepted to LSA Honors program and we are In-state. just want to let every one know that in-state scholarship has begun (other than shipman’s) .

Congrats to those getting scholarship notification.
LonelyHapax, are you OOS? If so, I believe the tuition part of Shipman is higher than what you’re noting – that’s the in-state version of shipman, afaik. Check into it. Your net cost should be substantially less than 27k if you’re ultimately selected. Good luck!

Hey everyone, I just found out I am to receive the Jean Fairfax scholarship at 10k/year and i thought i’d share my stats.

OOS EA Applicant
Ethnicity: Asian
GPA: 89uw 91w at competitive public
SAT: 690 CR 760 M 800 W= total 2250
ACT: 34
EC: forensic speech, varsity football, varsity track, model congress (leadership position), NHS
Community Service: bunch of hours at a soup kitchen and tutoring through NHS

@yeaabuddy, did you “just” find out as in today? I thought all the Fairfax scholarships were given out weeks ago…

@thatrunnerkid The letter was dated as early january and has been in my house the whole but somehow remained unopened, hence my late notice

My son will also be attending Shipman Weekend! He has been accepted to MIT and is leaning in that direction but the practical matter is that it depends on how much financial aid he gets from both. As an OOS, without the Shipman Scholarship, it will be difficult to afford Michigan and he would probably go to MIT. With the Shipman Scholarship, it will be a difficult decision!

Congrats to all who received Shipman invite. that must be exciting weekend to attend!!!

few of them have PM me to ask for my S’ stats since he got Deans merit scholarship. As I am a new member, it does not allow me to post the PM reply unless I have 15 posts. That is a lot. I do not want to sound like I have not replied. so here is the stats for those who have PM’d me. My S 's stats are ACT 36, SAT 2380, GPA weighed 4.58, lots of EC’s including research.

Congratulations to everyone who received a scholarship! :)

Jrkiyer, just think how big of a scholarship your S could have snagged if he didn’t have that weakness on SAT scores :)

I hope CC is a very distorted experience. Seems like every kid in the country has 2350+, and then you read posts where some schools/programs are considered major reaches because a kid ONLY has a 760 on the math (i.e. “if you get that math up above 760 then you might have a better shot at Vandy or Hopkins”).
