@kflan13 Did you apply last year when you were a freshman at UNCW?
@UNCISMYDREAM i did! It was super soul crushing getting rejected last year since both my parents went… high school was really tough for me and I’m just hoping my high school stats don’t drag me down
If you are applying as a junior, your high school stats are much less relevant than for sophomore applicants. They would focus primarily on your college stats for your decision. There are quite a few people from past years UNC transfer forums who had low high school stats but were still accepted as juniors because of good college stats among other things.
Do you guys think that unweighted GPA of 2.42 at HS and then GPA of 3.55 at college with 46 completed credits is a major academic improvement?
In my opinion, yes.
I hope they will consider my academic improvement from HS to college during the process. To be honest, based on the threads from the last couple years, anyone with 3.7+ GPA and more than three semesters of coursework completed along with decent essays, seem to have a high chance getting in. Kinda loss of hope here
@UNCISMYDREAM Keep up the hope!! You never know how UNC reviews applicants so stay positive until decisions come out
3.7 is just the average GPA though, so having a 3.55 definitely doesn’t mean you should lose hope. You are likely within the GPA range for accepted students. They will look at everything in your application, so having a slightly below average GPA won’t count you out. @UNCISMYDREAM
I am sure 3.55 is still in the range of accepted students, but this time I am reapplying as an out-of-state, I applied two years ago when I was in-state. I am already ready for the rejection letter, I will be very very very surprised if I get in, hope we all can hear good news on mid-April, just three more weeks.
I hope I get in man…its been my dream since high school. If my professor and advisor who is a UNC alumnus recommended me does that increase my chances? @UNCISMYDREAM
I don’t really know how much consideration UNC gives recommendations, so it’s hard to say if it helps chances much or not. I would think it helps some, but not as much as being a legacy applicant. I wish everyone the best of luck in the upcoming weeks. I have wanted to go to UNC since I moved to NC in 2009.
@NerdyNinja80 What is your stat? How many credits have you completed?
TBH, I would say the most important for the transfer admissions is GPA and test scores > Essays > activities > recommendation. Test scores will come less important if you have 30+ credits and completely overshadowed by GPA if you have three semesters completed coursework. Legacy will help but you still need solid grades. IDK if UNC considers sister as legacy or not because my sister will graduate this May. BTW, this is the first year that UNC requires a recommendation for the transfer students.
All these recent comments make me nervous. Pretty sure they haven’t even started looking at transfer apps yet, part of my application was missing and when I called last week they told me not to worry since iI was a transfer applicant. Also, regular admission freshman decisions come out sometime soon so they have been busy working on those.
I was admitted last year as a freshman and chose to go to another school, really regretting that now. I have a 3.44 but that is only based on 4 classes and did great on 3 of those, 3.8 and so only 1 class doesn’t look great but it did bring down the GPA. I really believe UNC is very holistic with their review of applications and considers all parts. Not sure GPA is greater then test scores, etc. They have you do 3 essays for a reason. Some schools you apply to transfer to require 0 essays. In fact probably one of the most holistic of all the schools I applied to last year. This is based on my friends that have gotten in in the past.
None of us really know how much consideration or priority UNC places on certain aspects of our applications, so I think it’s best for us to stay positive until decisions are released. There’s nothing we can change now, all of our applications have been submitted and are being reviewed now or very soon.
I thought they started review transfer applicants after the deadline, after reading the comments it seems that they will review them after the regular decision is released.
If your application is complete they start reviewing them. My daughter received an email quite a while back stating hers was complete and ready to be reviewed.
@tzglass What are you missing from your transfer application?
Ready to be reviewed is different than the day they actually start reviewing though isn’t it? Ready to be reviewed means everything is complete. I got the email that my app was complete and ready for review back in January.
@HSstudentNC Yes, they review them as they become complete. There is no way that they wait until after regular admissions come out to start looking at them. There are too many to read. That is why it is important to have everything in close to deadline as possible.
