Accepted - International Student - Econ major (obviously can’t go to b-school right away) with GPA of 3.9
One year as a business major at out of state 4-year university + another year at California Community College.
Didn’t submit any test score because of junior standing and exceeded English proficiency required.
Still waiting to hear back from USC and NYU.
Hey all. I have a transfer advising appointment today and will hopefully come back with some useful information.
@Nurse001 I’m an instate student. I knew there would be some classes that didn’t transfer and there are some this semester that are exclusive to my current university. I current attend Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina. I plan on talking with my advisor and figuring these things out. If things stand as is, I will more than likely take some summer classes and do what I can to catch up. I expected it to be like this just not quite as bad.
So I talked to an adviser today. Econ 410 is basically full and impossible to get into at this point. The only way that I could attend the business school next spring, is if I complete that class, which is obviously not possible. At this point in time I don’t feel very passionate about attending UNC. If any other good school accepts me, then I will go there. I am not bashing UNC, but I just feel that it’s unfair to ask transfer students (especially if they are juniors) to live with the possibility of never getting into the business school. At UNC graduating will take me probably a year longer than at a comparable school.
@BryantB02 I know exactly were that is. We live in Matthews Yes I would recommend summer school. You can take 2 classes per semester. I think I read if you want to take summer classes before you transfer you can call admissions and they can change you to summer session and you can enroll in classes. It is about $800 or close. My son took 2 summer classes last summer and got a summer job on campus so housing was free. Might think about that for next summer.
@Vincent1997 I am so sorry that is happening. Did you call the dean of the Business School. They may have more leverage in getting you in as the class is needed. Is there a wait list you can get on?
What other schools did you get into or applied too?
@Nurse001 I want to take summer classes but it’s pretty expensive for out of state. How did the free housing work? Was it dependent on the job he got or did he use the money he made to pay for it?
@Nurse001 There is no waitlist and the odd thing is that the class has 136/120 seats filled. So somehow other people got in after it was full. I am not sure if the business school can help since it’s a CAS course. I’ll try to call again and see what I can do. I appreciate your help :)>-
Edit: I am waiting for my dream school still (UVA), but being out of state my hopes are not too high.
@Vincent1997 You got in to UNC as a OOS, you should be fine for UVA
@Vincent1997 I feel the same way. I was on campus today visiting my boyfriend so I decided to go to walk-in hours at the advising office. The advisor I saw was less than helpful and told me many of the classes I need I’m not going to be able to enroll in. He also said I may have to take an extra year if I want to be admitted to the major I thought I was already admitted for because most people apply to the school of public health during their sophomore year and if my credits transfer I’ll be a junior. I still don’t have my transfer credit report either so no one could help me with anything. I’m very discouraged and a little disappointed with how the transfer process is handled. I love UNC and I’m definitely attending, I just hope things get better from here.
@alliezannino I wish you the best of luck! I truly share your pain. It’s very discouraging to have worked so hard to get into a great University like UNC, only to be right back at the bottom. I suppose the silver lining is that at least now you/we are at a good University and not some CC. I called around a little bit and they suggested that I should contact the professor directly. I am writing an e-mail right now and hoping for the best. I will update you here, if it leads anywhere.
I share similar frustrations. Many of my major required courses that juniors take aren’t available even after talking to the department head for my major. Luckily I was able to get into one, but it means I’ll have to hope I can enroll in 3-4 next semester to stay on track. I am now enrolling in just anything that I’m required to take, which isn’t as easy as it sounds. Hopefully my transfer credit report will be more accurate once I get my Associate’s degree this summer. I am very grateful to be enrolled in an amazing university, but the transfer process is definitely not “smooth”. I hope you guys are able to get your issues resolved as well.
Yup even for GE classes it’s nearly impossible for me to chose. On top of that my transfer report hasn’t been completed either
@AwkwardNewYorker Classes for OOS will be much more in price but not sure how much. You can call financial and ask how much a credit hr is to get your price. My son works for UNC housing so some of the jobs come with free summer housing. What I would recommend if you decide to do this summer go to Admitted: UNC 2019 in facebook. There are sooooo many people subletting apts for cheap. It would be much cheaper than at UNC. Next summer plenty of emails will come out summer jobs. Try to get one with free housing.
@alliezannino I understand your disappointment with advising. Same thing happened to my son. He came out and called me and said the advisor was usless one day when he went to walk in hours. He had to make an appt and talk to a different advisor. I am sorry about the Public Health School but you have to apply. Unfortunately you cannot stay at Chapel hill an extra year. They only extend 1 term and you have to submit a form to get approval.
@Vincent1997 The reason those classes are over filled is either an advisor put them in or the dean of dept put them in. The reason for the over fill is alot of people will drop it the first week. I hope your email works!!!
I seems there is alot of issues with transferring. If my daughter got in instead of being on wait list we would be dealing with all this. What I would tell you is don’t stop calling or emailing until you get what you need as a transfer.
To all the transfers, I know this is not what you want to hear but if is not going to work with your major and you do not think you can graduate on time with doing summers too then you probably should not transfer. I know its heartbreaking but it is very expensive especially for OOS.
I really hope you all can make it work as UNC is amazing. We were there on campus today and took my son and a friend to lunch. It is a beautiful day and so many kids out. Truly beautiful!! I am very happy to help with anyway!
I can only imagine how difficult it will be for the students who are accepted and enroll after being on the waitlist. Does anyone know if transfers are always at a disadvantage when registering since we have had fewer semesters in residence? If I understand correctly, the registration dates are based on semesters in residence.
Here is how the registration process works:
How is my enrollment appointment assigned?
Enrollment appointment dates are assigned each term in accordance with the registration schedule posted on the University Registrar’s Calendars.
Enrollment appointment dates for undergraduate students are assigned on the basis of terms in residence.
Your Semesters (Terms in Residence) are tallied in three ways:
UNC‐Chapel Hill full‐time enrollment
Regardless of the number of credit hours, any fall or spring semester of enrollment in UNC‐Chapel Hill courses (including UNC‐CH Study Abroad courses, but excluding Carolina Courses Online) tallies as a semester used up, unless you are enrolled as a part‐time student through Part‐time Classroom Studies. (Summer sessions at UNC‐Chapel Hill do not count as semesters.)
UNC‐Chapel Hill part‐time enrollment
A semester is tallied for each full multiple of 15 cumulative credit hours earned at UNC‐Chapel Hill in fall or spring terms (not summer terms) in which you are enrolled as a part‐time student through Part‐time Classroom Studies.
Transfer credits awarded for courses taken at other colleges
A semester is tallied for each full multiple of 15 cumulative transfer‐credit hours awarded for courses taken at other colleges. Excluded from this calculation are transfer hours awarded for courses taken either concurrent with high‐school or in any summer term after your first term at UNC Chapel Hill.
For people who have gotten their transfer credit evaluations, do you guys have to take ENG 105. According to the transfer credit chart my ENG 101 and 102 class transfers as a CR1 and CR2 credit. Just wondering if I should register for 105
@AwkwardNewYorker This is what I found so if they are not giving you credit sign up if its open.
Why do I have to take ENGL 105:
In the Fall of 2012, the University instituted a new policy for all new students to take one semester of ENGL 105: English Composition and Rhetoric. Students cannot be exempted out of it by any test scores. Transfer students may fulfill this requirement with a course equivalent to ENGL 105 transferred from another institution.
I have to take ENGL 105 because my English credit from my current school comes from AP English credit which would only be UNC’s ENGL 110.
@Nurse001 thank you, I’ll sign up just in case
